How do I keep my cats from peeing all over the carpet?

34 Answers  |  Asked By: natel   1

My cat pees in it’s litter box, but it also pees in random places, like all over the carpet and on other stuff. I really don’t want to get rid of my cat, but I don’t want to ruin my carpet. Is there a way to train your cat to use the litter box every time it has to go to the bathroom?

My cats also do not like the smell of mint and peppermint. So you can give that a shot.

Be sure to treat the areas he/she has peed on with a product specifically made for cat urine (Nature’s Miracle is pretty good, and doesn’t leave behind an equally offensive chemical smell). Uric acid crystallizes, and if you don’t use the proper cleaner, those crystals will reactivate anytime the carpet is wet, or even if there is some humidity in the room. Those same crystals will also allow your cat to smell that he/she went there once, and in the cat’s mind, that is the go ahead to go in that spot again. If the cat peed in a carpeted area near the edges (where the tack strip is) you may need to pull up the entire carpet. The porous wood used for tack strip is nearly impossible to remove urine from.

Has your cat always peed in places other than the litter box? Some cats pee in various places due to anxiety - if something has changed in your home, this can be a contributing factor.

Be sure that the cat’s litter box is large, open (the hooded kind may make us feel better about not seeing their mess, but cats don’t care for them), and cleaned very regularly. Cats are very clean animals, even when it comes to their litter. If their box isn’t clean enough, they will find somewhere else to go.

You said your cat pees in the litter box, so he is litter trained, but the peeing everywhere else could be a sign of a urinary track infection. Cat’s with this type of infection don’t like to be petted on the lower back, are unusually aggressive, lethargic, and don’t socialize with the family or other pets. If your kitty is showing any of these symptoms along with the peeing problem, please take her to the vet doc. immediately. The longer you wait, the sicker kitty will get. Take care, and meow for now!

hewittk - in some places, the local animal shelters or vets will run specials on neutering/spaying and you can have it done cheaply. Keep an eye on the local newspapers or just call and ask them if they do these clinics in your area.

Castration. If will prevent male cats from peeing everywhere to mark their territory. Also will prevent that females get pregnant and deliver undesired kittens that no one will take care. It makes your cat less agressive aswell. And most important it can reduce the chances of you pet to develop some sorts of cancer.

your cat might be trying to tell ya that he or she is in pain if you take him or her to a vet and tell the guy whats going on he might be able to tell u ….or the cat doesent like the brand you put in the box….try another one… and i agree with kims and garylucy never hit your cat…touch it on the nose slightly but not hard and say no….again and again…and put em in front of the litter box and stroke him or her gently never hit your cat thats just cruel and so so so wrong in a hundered ways your cat is family love it like you love a baby brother or sister…or a baby of your own if your baby pees on the carpet u wont hit it will ya now?i dont think so… u’ll say no and touch its nose slightly with out pain its the only way… so i hope its stops and good luck…

I don’t even think rubbing it’s nose in it is a good idea! If my cat starts to do something unpleasant on the carpet (in my case it is puking) I grab her by the scruff of her neck and throw her outside. If anything, you should put their nose NEXT TO IT and tell them no. How would you feel if someone rubbed your nose in your pee?

Comments to Answer

Rubbing their nose in it actually reinforces the behavior, a lot of people don't realize that. Cats recognize their "bathroom" area by smell.

I agree with answer # 14… I am having the same problems. I took our cat today to the vet, and they took a urine sample from her and they are testing it. The vet told me that she very well could have a urinary tract infection, or some crystals in her urinary tract (sounds painful!). I am still waiting to hear the results from the vet visit.

The results from the vet were normal, so she doesn't have anything medically wrong. it's behavioral.

Its good ur cat k nows to pee in the litter box an the sighns of him about to go are, when he stars scrthing the floor an of coorse squatting. But yeah you can to the orange peel, but they also pee to leave thie scent. there is this spray you put in anywhere you think your cat may pee. and so when they pass buy to check itll be there. because they will check if thiere scents thier espesiaclly if you have anoher cat in the house which shows ownership. but never hit your pet if they do go by accident. they will be terrified of you when they see you. Whuch will probable make the pee more…… So tell me if this works; if not i always recommend you try the oranges.

your cat may be marking its territory or it get exited and pees were ever it is which is the carpet.

Answer 25
kitty

There could be a medical reason why they pee other places too, urinary tract infections etc. I went thru this with a diabetic cat i used to have. Another thing is once they’ve peed in a certain place,as long as that smell is still there they will continue to go in the same spot. The smell tells them that’s where they’re supposed to go so until the smell is gone they’ll just keep doing it. My mom had to tear up the carpet in her closet because she couldn’t completely get rid of the smell…it can soak thru the carpet and into the floorboards too.

Answer 26
kitty

i heard that everytime you see your cat peeing, spray him with water. cats hate water and it teaches them NOT to pee on the carpet.

Answer 27
kitty

Is it fixed. It could be marking its territory. Or looking for a mate.

By: Fluffy   1972

Answer 28
kitty

Well, my cat did this. We have to clean the litter box every day now because if we don’t our cat starts to spray other places. Also, cats mark their territory with spraying, but if you can find a way to get rid of the smell, there is less of a chance that they will go there again. Oh, here’s another suggestion; you can also put the food and water where the cat is spraying. Cat’s tend not to spray where their food and water is.

what yous should do , is everytime feed your cat on this case give it something to drink but the cat in the litter box. Keep doing this for a while so your cat can get used to the ltter box and know that they have to use it there and not nowwhere elese.although your cat does sometimes use it in the litter box u have to make sure he/she does it everytime it have to use it thats the same thing i did do i hope it work for you good luck!

Regarding the "whack on the head and rub their nose in it" method...cats don't understand this. It may actually make the behavior worse. When you "whack" the cat and then immediately carry it to his litter box, you create a negative association with the litter box (and if this is frequent, a negative association with you). If you already have an anxious cat, this will only increase their anxiety, also creating further accidents.

And it might hurt the cat you know we are bigger than them and stronger it may seem like only a "tap" to us but to them it could feel like a punch!

By: hewittk   375

Don't hit your pet ever. Hitting on the head instills fear, and the cat will have a scared pee immediately, before you can even carry it to the box. Rub her nose in it, WITHOUT hurting her, and saying NO can help, but take her to the vet first. Rule out any underlying health issues, and for goodness sake, stop hitting her, you are creating anxiety, and more peeing on the floor when you do.

I agree with Kims. You could go to jail for abusing a cat, and knowing that some body hits a cat makes me sick to my stomache. A cat or any animal for that matter is a defenseless creature, and it is not its fault for peeing in the house it is more the owner's fault. And think about it, is a carpet worth the amount of pain that your cat has to go through every time you 'whack' him? No, it isn't. Is your carpet worth the life of your cat? No.

My mom is sitting here and I am reading your posts out loud. She suggested that you do this: Simply carefully follow your cat around for a day or two, carrying a spray bottle. Whenever your cat begins to lower its rear, give it a quick spritz. I believe this would be an effective method. Try it. Don't whack your cat. Listen to cheeqz!
