Cats are fastidious animals, and if the litter box is dirty, they look elsewhere for a place to go. Think of how you felt the last time you were faced with a dirty public restroom, and you can probably empathize!
Starting Out Clean
Even if the box you bought is brand new, give it a good scrubbing with hot water and soap, rinse well, and let it air dry. Cats have a much better sense of smell than we do, and they may be put off by the odor a new box has picked up through its manufacturing, shipping, and storage before you bought it.
If the box has been used before, follow the soap-and-water scrub with a bleach soak - one-half cup to a gallon of water will do - (some say just a capful of bleach to gallon of water) and then rinse, rinse, rinse and allow to air dry. Diluted bleach is a safe disinfectant, but other types of disinfectant shouldn’t be used - their lingering scent may cause more harm than good. Ammonia, for example, shares some chemical properties with urine and can make a clean box smell dirty to a cat.

You absolutely have to clean the litter box!!! Otherwise your cat will stop using it because it stinks (and cats have a far more sensitive sense of smell than we do!!). Additionally, it will be quite unpleasant for you and your family.
Make sure you’re using a good, absorbent litter, too. That should help the urine from saturating so deep into the box that it is hitting the actual container. But you will have to actually clean the box itself (not just clean out the soiled litter & replace it).

Catsofmany is right,if their box gets too dirty they will go elsewhere. The box should be scooped out everyday and the litter should be changed and the box cleaned every couple weeks. When they pee it sometimes sticks to the side of my litterbox too. When i clean the box itself i take it outside and spray it down with a hose or put it in the tub and spray it with a detachable sprayer. Then i clean it out with diluted bleach ,dry it,and put in fresh litter. I used to put plastic liners in the box so the pee wouldn’t stick to the box, but they are pointless. The cats usually tear holes in them when they dig around in the litter box.

My mom makes me clean the litterbox also everyday! And about the pee sticking to the litterbox, that should not happen. To prevent this, add much more litterbox in the box. Make sure there is at least one inch around the whole box.

You know, it isn't a terrible thing that the litter sticks to the box. Mine does, but not on the sides, on the bottom. Then we have to clean it out.

My parents use to make me clean the litterbox. Then, we got another cat for my little sister, she said she would clean the litter box (which we all wanted her to do) but my dad was scared she would make a mess or mess up or something. So he cleans the litter boxes. If you dont’ clean the litter box, sometimes your cat will actually stop using it and start going all around the house. Yes, the cat’s urine does harden and stick to the litter, which many people think is not fun to clean out.
Also, you need to clean the litter too. You should probably replace the litter in the litter box every two weeks.

absolutely! your cat can actually DIE from the bactieria! and dont worry about the pee sticking,if you clean it evry day it will be easier to handle. atl east once a month, dump the whole thing out.in a trash bag,out side, etc. then, clean it with a hose. ( it gets rid of that NASTY smell.)

I’ll say that you have to clean the litter box because if the litter box is dirty than the cat won’t accept that and wander somewhere else to go potty. Also if you don’t clean the litter box it might get a little too smelly. ![]()

Yes you do have to clean the box out and if you are using a clumping litter just make the liter deeper and that will ellimanate the pee from sticking to the bottom of the box.
