Is it possible to train my cat to go on a treadmill?

9 Answers  |  Asked By: Ilikecats   44

My cat is an indoor cat and I would like to give her some kind of exercise, recently we had bought an electric tradmill, and she is TERRIFIED of it, she hates it, so I was wondering if it was possible to teach your cat to use one, if it is it would be great!

I think it would be much safer for your cat to get a laser toy and let her chase that. She already hates and fears the treadmill so why put her through the trauma of trying to get her to use it? They sell floor to ceiling scratching posts that provide great exercise for cats.

I agree with Catsofmany. Just play with your cat.

I've tried the leash and harness, she hates that just as much, Also, the laser doesn't seem to interest her. She plays but only for a certainm amount of time too

You never want to use a human treadmill for your pet. They sell pet treadmills that are designed for the comfort and safety of your pet. Your pet needs to feel safe and stable while on the machine. Some of the treadmills have enclosures for the pets to make them feel safer. Human treadmills are not able to handle all the hair that will eventually get wrapped around the motor and rollers and wear out the machine. Treadmills for pets are designed so the hair will not affect the machine. Human treadmills have shock absorbing qualities that your pet is not able to handle. Before you go out and buy a treadmill for your pet you will want to make sure that you have talked to your veterinarian first to make sure this will be a perfect fit for you and your pet.

The short anwser to your question is YES u can train a cat to go on a treadmill, but you shouldn’t.

Some Cat breeds like to go on treadmills, some even will let u put a harness on them so they can go outside for walks with you; so you could train ure cat to walk on the treadmill at some point but it’d be so damaging to their health and general well being.

I have tried the harness and leash, she hates that just as much, or more then the treadmill itself. My cat has no breed. She's just a grey cat. Lol. Could you explain how it damages their health?

If she’s that terrified of it, any attempts to get her on it will probably result in you being bitten or scratched and your cat hiding under the furniture. I wouldn’t recommend it. If you need your cat to get more exercise try to find some toys she likes, interactive ones that she can chase are the best, like kitty fishing poles and laser pointers. If you don’t have much money, just ball up some old receipts and throw them for her to chase.

She just clings to me, lol. Yeah, the only problem is, the only toys that interest her are twisties, she chases them for a bit.
