Would it be okay if I used a brush with bristles on a short-haired cat?

8 Answers  |  Asked By: tsuiyansuet   42

My cat’s fur is really matted - so matted that my mum has to cut of the matted part really often. I know getting a brush with those sharp bristles will help seperate the fur, but I’m worried that it will harm her skin because I don’t know how sensitive her skin is. And my cat is very picky about getting brushed - she’ll just keep on trying to swat the brush. And if you can find a brush between the price of $5 - $15 that would probably seperate it well, I would appreciate it. Just post the link with your answer. And the stores would have to be chain stores, because there may only be one of your stores where you live.

Try using the brush with bristles that your talking about. Just be careful brushing your cat with it. If it seems to hurt your cat or your cat makes sounds like hissing, growling, or tries to run away at full force
stop using the brush and buy an untangling shampoo for your cat or try to find a softer rubber brush to use. If your cat doesn\\\’t panic just keep an eye out for any scratches on it\\\’s skin. If you can\\\’t get the mat out, just continue letting someone cut the mat out for you or go to the vet and have it professionally removed.

Maybe i am misunderstanding, but if your cat is short haired there should not be any matting of the fur unless your cat is having a problem with its saliva. If not then a good comb for preventing matting is below.

I generally use a slicker brush on both of my cats, one of which is short-haired. His coat is short but EXTREMELY thick, so it certainly has potential to mat.

If you\\\’re having this trouble often, you might want to try a de-shedding tool. That will remove some of that undercoat so that he doesn\\\’t mat up as much. I like - NO - I LOVELOVELOVE the Furminator. You can get it on amazon for about $25 (w/free shipping): http://www.amazon.com/FURminator-deShedding-Tool-4-Inch-Edge/dp/B000PU31MY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1248705433&sr=8-1

for short hair cats you can use a regular comb. Since the bristles on the comb feels good to the cat it is very simple.
