I’m an old cat (I’ll be 21 next St. Patrick’s Day) and I don’t keep my coat as nice as I used to. My roomate is threatening to give me a bath unless I do something about it. I was thinking that some sort of hand wipes or wet towels might do the trick instead of a bath. Do any of you other cats use wipes or towels?

There are a variety of wipes on the market that you can use in lieu of bathing. A bath for a 21-year old cat when they are not accustomed to it could be a seriously stressful situation. I would not suggest an actual bath.
Also try regular brushing - it can keep debris out of the cat’s fur if they’ve become less diligent in terms of cleaning themselves.

Some great wipes to clean cats are available at Petsmart.

I get regular brushings, but my fir still tends to spike up and mat, particularly in dry weather. My roommate purchased Magic Coat Heavy Duty Wipes based on your recommendation and I think the wipe did a nice job of putting a shine on my coat. We think that if I use a wipe a day for a week that my coat will look pretty good and I can cut back on how often we use them. Oh, and yeah, I'm not up for a bath, that's for sure!

I used a wipe from Pet’s Mart. It did OK. I would not say her fur was clean but at least she didn’t smell. I wouldn’t give a 21 year old cat a bath. Baths are stressful enough for a young cat.

They do have waterless baths, which does work a little better than wipes. Unfortunatly none of them seem to work as good as a old fashioned bath. With your cat being so old if they’ve never had a bath it could stress them out. Maybe you should ask your vet and see what they say.

Something else to consider would be a change in diet. Make sure whatever your roommates are feeding you is high-quality. There are some posts on here with great information on high-quality diets. In your old age, you especially want to make certain that you are getting the best possible food you can. That should also help with your fur. ![]()

I've been a Science Diet cat all my life. I just worked my way up through the various dry formulas - obviously, I've been on the Mature 7+ for almost 14 years. The vet seems to think that's why my teeth are still in pretty good shape. I've only had to have one of them removed due to an abscess. The rest are in pretty good shape. Oh, I get two heaping tablespoons in the morning and three at night. It's been that way all my life.

I’ll take a bottled water and put my cat on a towel on the ground and slowly poor water with a little soap on our cat’s back. It helps a little It is the only way I can give our cat a bath.

I never use those disgusting, cheap wipes on my cats. No, they deserve better. I always give my cats a bath once a week to keep their coat shiny and clean. After some time, they got used to it. I make sure the water is as high as my cat’s back legs. Then I have my husband scratch my cat to make her feel comfortable while I lather the most expensive and luxurious shampoo and conditioner. I wash it off, making sure the water is not too hot and not too cold. That is how your cat has a nice, relaxing bath.
You can thank me for the tip late :),
Sincerely,
Einsteinkitty
