My cat has short hair, but I’ve heard that grooming is important. How often should I brush her?

Frequent grooming is the most effective means of preventing hairballs. In addition to that, it can become a soothing, bonding ritual for the two of you.
There’s no set guideline for how often it should be done - that’s up to you. But I would recommend at least once a week to keep on top of things. Daily brushing would be fine as well.
I brush Poppy, a long-hair, every couple of days. But Sophie the short-hair is brushed by her “Daddy” every evening. If he doesn’t pull out the equipment, she actually hassles him into it! Jumping on his back, making sweet talk…..it’s really quite sickening to watch!
Here is a list of the grooming tools I use:
For long-haired cats:
I use a natural bristle brush just for Poppy’s enjoyment. It does nothing for removing hair. (http://www.terrificpets.com/pet_supplies/dog/grooming/100149.asp)
I use a flea comb when I really want to get at that undercoat. (http://www.gripsoft.net/cart_product929-1-87.html?Title=GRIPSOFT%20FLEA%20COMB)
I use an undercoat rake which doesn’t pull at all and works fairly well at removing that dead hair. It doesn’t catch the hair very well, though, so you’ll have to gather it off the cat and off the brushing surface when you’re done.

The Cat Comb works like the flea comb although it doesn’t pull as much and as a result isn’t as effective. But for cats who may not enjoy the flea comb this would be a good choice: http://www.gripsoft.net/cart_product930-1-87.html?Title=GRIPSOFT%20CAT%20COMB
I also have a slicker brush: (http://www.morrco.com/slickerbrush.html)
For short-haired cats:
Shedding blade: http://www.gripsoft.net/cart_product941-1-87.html?Title=GRIPSOFT%20CAT%20SHED... This works nicely at removing some of the undercoat, but like the undercoat rake, the hair tends not to stay on the comb but may go anywhere.
The flea comb isn’t as amazing with short-hairs but it still works well. Same is true for the cat comb.
The slicker brush may be the best bet here.

Just brush as much as needed. It is good to brush your cat’s fur daily especially if he/she sheds a lot.

I think you should at least brush her once or twice a day because a cat has a long rough tounge just to keep it shiny!OH! and you might want to make sure to get the knots out too!
