brushing them is always a good idea, that’s what my mom and I do with my cat. Science Diet has a food for adult cats that specializes in hairball control.
Cats can also get hairballs from eating furry animals such as mice and rabbits, so you can either keep your cat inside, or keep them away from small, furry animals.
For best advice, talk to your vet, they’re the expert ![]()

A high-quality diet and regular grooming will reduce a great deal of fur consumption that leads to hairballs. But ingestion of fur is inevitable! Products like Laxatone are available at just about any pet store - they generally have a petrolatum base, which coats the hairs and keeps them from balling up in the digestive track. The individual hairs are thus easier to pass. There are also natural remedies. In a previous post on this site, Catsofmany mentioned canned pumpkin (plain), butter, and baby food (WITHOUT ONION POWDER) as possible natural remedies. A plant fiber like cat grass or catnip can also help them pass their hairballs.

The best way to help with hairballs is to brush your cat daily. There are also good foods on the market for hairballs. I have never been able to stop hairballs but these two things do help. There are also good products out there to help cats pass their hair.
