Do longhaired cats get really hot in the summmertime?

I was just wondering if we should keep in cool in the house this time of year and have fans on? I don’t want Squeaky to overheat!

It\\\’s a good idea to keep the fans running for you and for the cat. Also, just leaving a fresh bowl of COLD water throughout the day will be fine. As long as the cat has shade, and water so it will not dehydrate, then it should be fine! Water us most important, though.

I totally agree. And remember, people, ANY cat can overheat, regardless of the length of its fur.

Well I\\\’m reading a cat book and this book says that cats shed their fur in the summer.

They only shed SOME fur-their winter coat. Cats can still get overheated easily. It is not like they go bald in the summer! (now there is a funny picture XD) Make sure they have plenty of cold water in the summer, too.

no long hair cats do not get hot …the hair get thick in winter and thin in summer and it helps the cat keep cool in summer and warm in winter

I would! I have a long haired cat, Stitch. We have an air conditioner and we keep that on. Its in one of the bedrooms so he will spend most of his time sleeping in there.

My Felix is a long haired orange fluff master, as my little brother puts it. Our summers get pretty hot here in Utah, but Felix goes outside whenever he wants. He\\\’ll run around crazy like chasing birds and our other cat and when he gets hot simply lays down in the shade and pants. It\\\’s not seen often, but cats will pant like dogs to relieve their bodies of heat. I make sure there is always fresh water available (or his favorite: jumping in the sink to drink from the faucet) and he\\\’ll come into the air conditioned house if he gets hot. Cats will do their own thing to relieve heat so I don\\\’t think you\\\’ll need to worry that much as long as he has the available resources to cool off (water, shade, cool house).

there\\\’s no need 2 worry about your cat over heating as long as you keep a bowl of cold water avalible and provide some shady areas.cats strech out when they lay down to cool off. Also, comb your cat everyday to get rid of loose fur. =) =D :)

you should try to take her to the groomer and get her hair cut over the summer and with a bit of time her hair will grow back in the fall or what and be nice and toasty for the winter!!!

Cats have methods of keeping themselfes cool like licking and sheding. Licking speeds up there sheding and the saliva keeps them cool. But, just to be shure you should leave them water and put fans on.
