Your cat most likely has an upper respiratory infection. It’s very common for Shelter cats to get URI’s.

URI’s can be deadly to cats when not treated because they easily develop into secondary infections. However a simple antibiotic for 10 days will help keep any serious problems from developing. A trip to the vet is in order before it develops into something more severe.

your kitty probably has a cold and might need antibiotics. Some cold symptoms are also symptoms of a respiratory infection which is more serious and must be treated. Since the kitty is new, I’d make sure to get this treated because many serious illnesses are spread around shelters.

Cats can get many of the same illnesses as humans, such as the common cold, asthma and hayfever. URI (upper respiratory infections usually involve one or both eyes tearing and conjunctivitus (with reddening), with a secondary infection causing pus, perhaps sealing an eye shut for a day. They don’t seem to have a treatment for URIs (viral infections), only for secondary (bacterial) infections. I have one cat that had a URI with a secondary infection. He went off his feed for days, losing weight, sleeping more than normal, and constant squinting. Fortunately this five-month oold pulled thru five and seemed to end up with a much better immune system (he didn’t get parvo when his litter-mates got it. I knew he was well (after almost two weeks) when his appetite improved and he stopped squinting. The cat with the URI, and the cats with parvo(distemper) all sneezed as their first symptoms. I hope it is just a cold no treatment needed or useful). Keep an eye out for other symptons, and get it treated if necessary. If caps is a pound, your cat will have been immunized against parvo.

If Kat says it’s a cold, I say it’s a cold! Lol. Make sure you get it checked out right away because you don’t want your cat spreading it to other cats. Ask your vet for a medication.

I had the same problem with one of my cats. I know how dangerous respiratory infections can be for cats so I took her to the vet. The vet gave me antibiotics and antihistamine for the cat. She had to take the medicine for seven days (which she hated). Now she’s fine.

I suggest you take your cat to the vet. Sneezing may be caused by different types of illnesses. Only a vet will be able to check your cat and see exactly what’s going on. Don’t just think it’s a cold. Remember, your cat is sneezing but he can’t tell you if he has any other symptoms. You took the first step by asking in this forum but remember, this is only a forum, we can’t see your cat. The vet is best way to go.
