Looking at the Iams website, looks like their ProActive Health Original with Chicken formula (dry; for adult cats) has the following ingredients list:

Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Meal, Corn Grits, Chicken Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, Sodium Bisulfate, Potassium Chloride, Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), DL-Methionine, Brewers Dried Yeast, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Minerals (Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate).

So your top five ingredients are a shade better than those of the Purina products (the top three protein sources are actually named), however you still have corn meal & corn grits in there, which can be a source of allergies.

Remember the list of common food allergies that TonkLady posted in the \\\”Scabs\\\” post: beef, corn, soy, seafood and dairy. So if your cat has a corn allergy, changing to this food isn\\\’t going to do anything. It\\\’s still a slight step up in the quality, but I can\\\’t say whether or not it will make a difference with her skin condition.

As you research foods, read the ingredients list. The more you educate yourself about what you\\\’re feeding your cat, the better. Expect to pay a bit more for a better food, but don\\\’t judge food simply based on its price. For example, foods like Science Diet & Royal Canin are overpriced considering the quality of ingredients. If you do your research, you can find the best possible food that will fit into your budget.

If you\\\’re sticking to kibble, here is a good website that evaluates some of the better choices of dry cat food on the market: http://cats.about.com/od/dryfood/tp/premdrycatfood.htm . Just read the ingredients & keep that list of common allergens in your mind when you do so.

I\\\’m not really an expert on cat feeding (like catsofmany and telegramsam) so I don\\\’t know which ingredients in cat foods cause allergies.

However, I do know how to answer your question a little bit. Cats have allergies from different things, so the Iams food may help. My cat cannot stand Science Diet, but she doesn\\\’t get allergies from other foods. So you can try Iams, and if you cat doesn\\\’t still have food allergies, stick with it.

Hope this helps,

Original lams food is not going to help your cat with it\\\’s allergies. If the lams food package says it is the kind that doesn\\\’t make cats have allergies, than it probably won\\\’t bug your cat. Although, the best thing to do is to ask the person that works at the shelter that you got your cat at and ask them what kind of food they gave them at the shelter. If that doesn\\\’t work, ask your cat\\\’s vetrinarian
