I wouldn’t until I checked with a vet. Do you know what’s causing the itching? Does he have fleas? It’s not a good idea to dose your cat with OTC meds unless you know what the problem is. Doing so could cause more problems for him. Get him into the vet asap.

Yes, I would call your vet and tell him that you need to get him in right now! Or as soon as he has an appt. open! If he doesn't haven an appt. open soon, then I would ask about the Benadryl. Not until you've asked would I use it.

Thanks for the comment I did call my vet and he said yes it is safe to give my cat (Bandit) some benadryl. He said 1ml. equals 1/4 teaspoon not more than 2ml. per every pound your cat weigh's give it to them every 6-8 hours. My cat stopped itching and biteing. Thanks for the responce!

While some human medicines are used in animals as well, some of them, like tylenol, are actually toxic to pets. I do believe diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is used for animals but the product you buy at the store is formulated and dosed for human beings. Keep in mind that a 8-pound cat could easily overdose on a medication meant for human beings who are typically 100-200 pounds. Breaking tablets isn’t a good way to change the dosage either, medicines often have buffers as well in them to control the release of the medicine and breaking is does not give you a precise dose. Cats have a different metabolism as well. There is no safe way to use human medicines on a cat. Call your veterinarian and she/he can probably give you something to help your cat.

Since your cat is itching, you might also want to check it for fleas. If you find what looks like dirt or coffee grounds on the cat’s skin around its neck, it probably has fleas and you can get a flea treatment at the store to get rid of them. You will also need to get rid of them in your house so they don’t come back.

If your cat doesn’t have fleas, it may have an allergy to something in its food such as corn or wheat or something in its environment such as a cleaning product you use in the house. You can discuss that with the veterinarian if that’s a possibility.

I agree with larka, i dont think you should give benadryl to your cat until the vet approves. It would not be the safest thing to do. i would call the vet and try to get an appointment soon.

Benadryl may contain chemicals that are toxic to cats and not to humans and benadryl was invented for human beings. But you should ask your vet if she has some medications or shmapoo for itchy skin.
