I guess I have a question for you, do you have a dog? My cat use to run around and pant just like a dog when she was younger. It was like she was trying to be just like my dog? But, in the past 6 months or so she also has been pulling her hair out., not really running around much though and she does kind of act like she is panting. I see her tongue out a lil bit and it actually seems like that is what she is doing.
I took her to the Veterinarian and she found a tumor or cyst under her tongue. They gave her a shot of steriod and I brought her home to think about having the lump sent in for a biopsy. She quit pulling her hair out for a month. I decided since she is 14 yrs. old and its expensive, not to put her through the biopsy part. A week or two went by & I couldn\\\’t take her pulling hair out again. So now she is on predisone I have to rub it in every other ear everyday. Now she doesn\\\’t pull hair out as much. She is very stubborn and won\\\’t let me look in her mouth. I can tell the lump is growing and she can only eat canned food right now and is having difficulty drinking. I been trying to get water down her with little syringe. Very difficult to do.
I am not sure why yours is pulling hair out, but I would have her checked by a Vet. I hope everything works out for your Cat. I know pulling the hair out is very flustrating. Maybe there is nothing at all wrong with your cat, its just something she does? I believe my cat can no longer lick to clean herself, so she is pulling on the hair, because she knows she is suppose to be cleaning herself. I think it makes her flustrated so she just keeps pulling at the hair? It is very sad. I could put us both through the pain and cost of biopsy and then possible surgery, and her not live at the end of it all. I am trying to keep her as happy and comfortable as possible.
I wish you both well and lots of luck with your cat.

If your cat is behaving strangely, it may be ill and you should take it to a veterinarian.

Fleas and mites (mange) can cause intense itching wherein the cat can pretty much denude itself in areas. That would be preferable to what dottimc is going thru. Easily and fairly inexpensively treated (at least when compared to surgery). Yes, to the vet.
