You can stop it by keeping the lid down. Cats like fresh, cold water.
My mother recently posted this……We keep our lid down because we have cats who will drink from the toilet otherwise. Gross as it sounds, they’re looking for fresh water as the toilet is flushed often and the water entering the toilet is cold and fresh. Try changing your cats water more often during the day and use a glass, stainless steel (only stainless steel) or ceramic bowl…never use plastic.
Plastic bowls are sturdy but they have some negatives. Plastic scratches and those open areas become breeding grounds for germs. Some cats develop allergies to plastic and end up with a cat acne on their chins. Best never to use plastic.
My birds, cats, and dogs get freshly washed water bowls every day. Don’t just dump the water and add more, wash it in hot soapy water and rinse well. Or have a spare bowl so they have a fresh bowl every day.

Yes, get them fresh water all the time and as soon as you see that they mey be out of it. My cats like to drink out of the shower after someone’s taken one. I go look at there dish, and what do you know? It’s empty. About every hour we have to fill it up because we have two cats and a sick beagles who’s meds make her drink tons of water. Fill it up with fresh water, preferbally not town water that comes from the sink ![]()

The most common reason is freshness. many times people do not realize how sensitive animals are. They see an empty bowl and fill it up thinking their pet will be happy. Water has chemicals the film over and coat the inside of the bowl and the pet can taste and smell this. The toilet is flushed often which keeps this film from building up.
The film is almost impossible to remove off of plastic bowls so these type should be avoided. Ceramic is the best and should be washed before new water is added each time.
You would not drink from a glass that has been used and sitting out. chances are your pet wont either unless it is a last resort.
