Our one cat ate all her kittens the first time she had kittens, the second time all were fine. And now with her last lot she also ate the kittens, fortunately i was able to save the one kitten. Why do they eat their kittens?

Get your cat spayed and stop contributing to the overpopulation of cats.
Shame on you!
http://www.wallysfriends.com/statistics.html
The average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in one year is 3.
The average number of kittens in a feline litter is 4–6.
In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce 420,000 cats.
Only 1 in 12 of those 420,000 cats born finds a home. :o(
Even if you found homes for all your cats, you are still taking away homes that other homeless cats could have had by adding to the population.
There are no excuses for your allowing a pet cat to have kittens.
Spay your cat!!!!

I agree with you Kat. that is ashame that there are so many people out there that don't spay and neteured there cat.and the sad part is that it don't cost much at all.there are animal shelters out there that will help and give you a discount if you do need help.i feel that if you know that you can't afford to spay and neteured a animal then don't be a animal owner.let someone else take the kitten that can take care of it the right way.so please spay and neteured your cat.

If you can't answer my question with the right answer, then keep your coment to yourself. We've already spayed 2 of our other cats, it's not that cheap, in which country do you live, i'm in South Africa! This one is next. We look VERY well after our pets!!! I even took the one that survived, and i'm busy feeding him with a bottle 6-8 times a day. If i didn't care about it, would i ask around about it? Maybe i ask around to see if i can do something to prevent it? I've asked our vets aswell, they are also not sure why. So as soon as i've got the bucks I'LL SPAY HER!!! Thank you for nothing!!!

I’m not really sure why but I heard sometimes the mother will eat her babies if they’re not fit enough to live and will die.

I’m sorry if I offended you. What I meant was - it would make me sick at heart to see kittens die. I’m assuming if you fought to save the last kittens life - then you care - so wouldn’t it be correct for me to assume it would make you “sick at heart” when they die? That’s all I meant by my comment.

Well not all cats do that. some may do but i do not know the reason as i have never heard about it.
Maybe their aggressiveness or i have heard that some animals eat thier babies because they are hungry. But you should take other people’s answer too

Chances are the kittens were dead before she ate them or close to death. The mother cat can sense this. Mother cats will usually suffocate their young first if they are sick at birth. Sometimes the mother will pass on a toxic poisoning that she has developed proir to their birth. Have you tried reintegrating the kitten with the mother to see if she will let it nurse? Obviously complete supervision would be necessary. If she rejects the kitten then there could be a medical issue with her.

I have no idea if it applies to cats but apparently some animals such as rabbits, including pet rabbits will sometimes eat their newborn. There are two theories that both revolve around the idea that the mother thinks the young are in danger. The first theory says that she wants to make them safe by getting them back inside her where a danger cannot get them and the other theory suggests that the mother thinks they will not survive due to the perceived risk and so tries to “recycle” the resources put into the litter she thinks will be taken so it can go towards a new litter at a safer time. I read this a long time ago and can’t remember the sources, but it sounds plausible for cats. Maybe if your cat does have more kittens you could make sure she does it somewhere quiet and secure with no constant foot traffic or noise so she feels safer. No guarantees but it might help.

There may have been something wrong with them and when they died, she ate them to clean up the nest. Please have her spayed. I would think you would be sick at heart watching this go on and would want to stop this.

Thank you, but i'll have her spayed as soon as we have the money, we've already spayed our other 2 cats, it's not that cheap in South Africa. I'm not sick at heart! If i were, why would i ask around and try to solve this for the meanwhile? And take the one that was still alive and there when i saw this, and feed him with a bottle every 6-8hours? Everyone is easy to say i'm sick and this and that, BUT LISTEN AREN'T I TRYING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

Keeping away from male cats would solve the problem. In the states we have agencies that help with spaying. Have you looked into that? Perhaps there is one that would help you.

There’s an overpopulation of cats out there? Oh wow. I never knew. Around where I live we geet a stray cat every now and then (even one who ran away from home cause it was mating season, gladly we found her owner. Oh im so happy!)
but an overpopulation is never good.
On the other hand, if EVERYONE spays their cats, what happens to the cat population? They cant have babys anymore, so the cat population would hit zero right? If there was an even balance things would work out good.
And it depends from what cat. Ive been reading a book called cat lore which reveals little known facts and the truth behind some myths. I don’t think youre sick. As soon as i get to that part (book is at a different house at the moment, brought it there and forgot it) I’ll tell you why mother cats eat their kittens. Ill try to help the best i can, SAVorster, Ok?

Thanks it will help, we're going to stray here. But i would still like to know why they do that... I was shocked the first time, i never knew cats do that. Then the second time she had babies, they were all fine, and now this time she did it again. Atleast i was able to save one... Feels like i have a baby in the house again, feeding him 6-8 times a day...
