Many of my cats hide too. It’s just in their nature. When a new person comes into the house they may perceive them as a threat even when they are not. So they hide, just as they would hide from something new and scary in the wild. It’s instinct.

If you want to change this behavior you will need to reinforce to your cat through training that coming out when new people are there will get them a treat. They would eventually associate people coming with getting a treat and they “should” stop hiding. It will take a lot of time to change this behavior though.

Personally, I’m ok with my cats that hide. I don’t feel they should be paraded if they don’t want to. I also feel that cats have a pretty good intuition about choosing who they should and should not show themselves to… so I just choose to leave it to my cats to decide if they want to come out or not.

Maybe your cat has had bad experiences with guests, or maybe your cat thinks that someone is coming to take them away from it’s home, your home.
