My mom tells me stories about cats she had when she was young and she told me that sometimes her cats ate grass. She said that it helps their digestion. I would like to know more about it.

They would eat grass because some brands of cat food is made with natural flavors and might contain grass. The cats might also think it is free cat-nip. Just to let you know, my new cat eats grass. He was just born a few days ago, but he eats grass! He is so little, and he is ALL black. Do NOT think that he is bad luck. I named him ” Halloween” because of his green eyes and black body and how he hides under the bed and looks creepy in the dark. Sorry I got off topic!

Sorry to get even more off topic, but I once had an all black kitten and I named her Coffee. She was a stray that I found around the 4th of July. I had another cat that was actually mine, Cappucino. I was trying to keep a drink theme going. But anyway, in answer to the question, cat's eat grass because it's just instinct. So trust me, you have nothing to worry about and grass is actually healthy.

Natural flavoring has nothing to do with natural. The manufacturer wants to add MSG (monosodium glutamate) without alarming customers, so they stop the processing part of the way to getting pure MSG (which kills new brain cells), and end up with natural flavoring (anywhere from 25 to 95% MSG), and cheaper to manufacture. (Yes, I have something against MSG - it gives me migraines - it can also be called hydrolyzed vegetable protein, anolyzed yeast extract, or a dozen different names depending on the plant used and the method of processing.) Not all natural flavoring has MSG. Natural spice flavoring doesn't, sweets (such as fruit pastries) don't. But the natural flavoring in soups, processed canned/packaged foods/meals,even cheeses and almost all sauces do.

They are selective about what kinds of grass they will eat. They choose grass based on odor/taste, and quality of fiber. The odor/taste are based on the chemical makeup of that grass. It has been thought that grass helps to soothe upset stomachs. The chemicals may help control parasites or microbes. The fiber may help them pass hairballs.

Animals(both dog and cat) most of the time eat grass when their stomach’s are upset. It actually makes them vomit, which makes them feel better. When my dogs try to eat grass, I don’t let them; about half an hour later they leave me a grassy surprise in my living room. Also, some grasses are bad for your pets, so make sure you try to stop them from eating it, if they do.
