Why doesn’t my cat use his litter box?

3 Answers  |  Asked By: dustymycat   5

He’s been defecating outside his litter box. (Very far from his litter box!) At first I thought he just didn’t like the litter but then sometimes he’d use it, sometimes he doesnt. It’s happened about 5 times already. And when he does use his litter box, he doesn’t “cover” the feces up like he normaly does. (I don’t see him defecating, I just see the feces there on the floor and clean it up, so who knows if he’s been urinating outside the litter box too or not) Health problem? I hope not! He’s about 11 months old.

It could be a health problem, it could just be stress related. Has anything changed recently? A new roommate/pet? New furniture? New home? Oftentimes, inappropriate elimination is due to stress. If he uses it some of the time, it\\\’s likely not because of the litterbox location or the specific litter you use… You\\\’re keeping it clean? Some cats are highly particular & won\\\’t use it if there\\\’s already waste in it. You may want to scoop more often to see if this is the case.

Ultimately, though, it would be a good idea to see your vet & discuss this with him/her. Inappropriate elimination can absolutely be medically related. Here\\\’s a good website for you on inappropriate elimination: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2174&aid=158

Good luck!!!

Ziggy_bo43 pretty much covered everything, but I will also add that some cats won\\\’t use litter boxes if they are located in a place in your house that has a lot of traffic. Some cats need privacy, some dont. I would try moving the litter box to an area that very few people use.

It\\\’s normal. All you have to do is put him in the litter box and have him hang out and if he goes potty and you see it then praise him. And if he goes outside his litter box and you see scold him and show him where his litter box is. And put him there.
