My cat always climbs up a mango tree onto our neighbors roof and we have to get a ladder to get him down. How do I train him to not go up there?

Keep him indoors. It\\\’s relatively easy to train a cat not to do something when they\\\’re indoors and you have the ability to keep a constant eye on them. When they\\\’re allowed out, unless you\\\’re following their every move, you really haven\\\’t any control over what they do. He\\\’ll live a much longer life if he stays indoors, plus you won\\\’t have to worry about fetching him off roofs.

I agree with ziggy_bo. However , if you won\\\’t keep it inside, there are two possibilities that I can see. Easiest is to tell it to climb back down by itself, and then ignore it (walk away). They are not as good at climbing down as up, but they can do it. Second possibility is to get some fox urine to spray around the mango tree to keep your cat from climbing it.

kittyluver66 Every place I\\\’ve lived, the part of a neighbor\\\’s tree that hangs over your yard is yours. But just to be neighborly, I would ask your neighbor. They would probably prefer some fox urine on the tree, rather than continuing to have you rescue your cat using a ladder. Ladders tend to be noisy, can cause damage to roofs, and can be hazardous to climb.

Comments aren\\\’t working for me :-(

In response to Kittyluver66\\\’s post about why you keep him outdoors:

There are solutions to excessive shedding - that shouldn\\\’t be cause for letting your cat roam around unsupervised and cutting its life span by about 75%, opening him up to such horrors as being hit by a car, contracting FIV or rabies, or becoming infested with fleas or ticks (not to mention a whole host of other dangers that await cats in the outdoor world). Often excessive shedding is due to diet. What are you feeding him? Switch him to a higher quality diet and you\\\’ll likely see a reduction in shedding. Also, regular grooming keeps shedding under control. If you brush him daily, or even every other day or weekly, you\\\’ll see a reduction in shedding, too.

It\\\’s an outdoor cat, and it sheds a lot. We don\\\’t usually let it in except for when it\\\’s raining and we still just keep it in the office then. And I like the fox urine idea, except it\\\’s our neighbors mango tree. (it hangs over the fence into our yard) and the idea about leaving it up there and letting it learn to climb down probably isn\\\’t the best for my cat, because once he went exploring( he does that a lot, that\\\’s how everybody in our neighborhood knows him) and he decided to climb on someone elses roof. He was missing for a few days. Four or five to be exact. It took a while until we found him. We had to put up lost cat signs. But he\\\’s a fat cat, so he wasn\\\’t too starved. everybody, thanks for your help though. If you have any more ideas still feel free to post them. Thanks!

When you find her on the roof place cat treats in a bowl on the ground and watch the cat out a window so that it doesn\\\’t pay attention to you and tries to get down to the treats.
