Well, since there\’s no problem, there\’s really no solution. But sometimes cats start bad habbits such as scratching when they are experiencing unusal amounts of stress, so try to avoid that.

Like Mischief_cat123 said, there\\\’s no problem right now… There\\\’s no reason to believe that she\\\’d start. Neither one of my cats has ever scratched the furniture.

Make sure your cats have ample scratching posts to satisfy their needs to scratch. You may want to try different materials (cardboard, sisal, carpet, etc.). I prefer sisal & cardboard because I don\\\’t want them to associate the feel of carpet as something they should be scratching. Don\\\’t want the house torn up! :) As long as your cat has plenty of opportunity to scratch elsewhere, she won\\\’t need to seek new places, like your furniture.

For a cat that has started scratching furniture, I have heard of three solutions. One is putting a balloon where the cat has scratched - the popping balloon scares the cat into not scratching. The second I heard about is hanging tape (sticky side out) at that spot - cats are supposed to hate tape on their paws - it might be best to do this only when you are around, to keep it from eating the tape.I have never tried those, so I can\\\’t really say if they work. The third is a product mentioned on this site several times - soft claws or soft paws - so the cat can scratch, but won\\\’t damage anything.

If you want to be sure, you can always get your cat a scratching post so that if it ever feels the urge to scratch, it won\\\’t go for the furniture :)
