My cat was once semi-feral. But she won’t stop trying to get out the door! She has escaped a few times, but she always darts into the backyard or under the car. She even escaped in the middle of winter once! Are there ways we can supervise letting her out so she stops trying to escape? There are dogs up and down the street, and all of them are big dogs too. Whenever someone comes over, we have to pick up the cat so she doesn’t get out. It’s hugely frustrating. How can I get her out of the habit of staying by the door when someone comes in?

You could try to harness and leash train her. We trained one of our cats. It takes time but it might be worth it in your case.
You could also consider building her a private cat enclosure so she could safely enjoy out door times.

I couldn't walk her, though, because we have huge dogs on our street and they would terrify my cat and I don't want that.
We're about to build a deck----maybe I can set something up. Thanks, Kat!

I would say the best thing to do would be to wait. I have taken in 4 cats that were all stray and one was feral and now they are great. at first they always tried to get out but now they dont even notice the door open. u could try to take her outside evry once in a while on a leash or if u have a screen porch on that.

If she’s semi-feral she wants to go out thats what shes used too. One of my cats is half-feral. I let him out all the time and their are big dogs. He can fend for himself he just attacks them and they leave him alone. If you want to help just if you see her by the door and there are no dogs out let her out. Then if you do that on a regular basis. She’ll stop trying to escape and know that that is her home. And if u see her and u see big dogs just go outside and keep an eye on her and the dogs and if they start to chase her make them stop. Yell at them or scare them away.

I don't want my cat to interact with the dogs, period.
