There are many reasons cats scratch furniture.
1. t’s stretches thier for-legs and back, very comfertable.
2. They’re marking thier territory. Cats instintively are very territorial. If a cat sees scratch marks on a tree in the wild, they know this is another cats territory!
3. Spreading thier scent. This is another way of marking thier territory. Cats’ paws have scent glands in them. When they sharpen their claws their scent is rubbed onto that surface. That’s why you will see declawed cats still making the motion of claw sharpening.
4. Sharpening their claws. Cats in the wild need to keep their claws sharp for hunting and fighting.

Cats can be trained not to scratch furniture. But always subsutitute a scrtching post! Cats can become emotionally stressed if they cannot scratch. Don’t declaw!!
