Not a great article on the website, but it does echo my thoughts on the subject. 1. Not for identification. If they need to get close (to confirm) (for) identification they sniff at faces/necks. Although their eyesight is not very good, they can frequently identify each other at a distance by color/pattern, body language, meowing, and general smell. 2. In general, I agree. They wonder if the other cat has had access to another food that they haven\\\’t. 3. As the author mentions, he isn\\\’t sure of what other purposes the smelling might serve. He does mention health. Cats, especially feral cats, prefer to keep their distance from any sick cat, and the cat\\\’s odor can tell them about some illnesses. 4. And then there are the males trying to see (smell) what the other males have been up to lately, and with whom. It is much more than just a simple greeting \\\’Hi.\\\” It is more like \\\”Hi. How are you? how have you been? what have you been up to lately? how is the family? still single?\\\”
