If your cat is scratching furinture you should give them stratch toys such as sisel post or cat condos with sratching post. You can put some a little cat nip on the toy to encourage them.Dont declaw your cat it is extremely painful.

While it is true that cats receive anesthesia for the declawing procedure, the process is painful afterwards. The nail and bone are taken off to the first joint-making it very difficult for kitty to walk. There is also a concern about excessive bleeding, possibly sending kitty into shock. I have only one kitty that is declawed (came from the shelter that way) and he not only looks a bit deformed with his shortened front paws but it is frustrating for him to not be able to scratch his nails on his scratching tree. Skip the declawing and keep the nails clipped short.

There are two reasons they scratch things. First is to sharpen their claws (for hunting, defense and climbing). Second is to strengthen the claws. You do need a scratching post.
