Rubbing his anal on the carpet.
For the first time ever, I saw my 8 yr old cat rub his anal across my carpet! I’ve never seen a cat do this, I thought it was only dogs that do that. Is he alright? Do I need to take him to his vet? Why did he or any other cat do this?

Yes, you need to take him to the vet.
He likely has one of two things going on. Either he has worms or his anal sacs are inflamed or need expressed. Prepare by taking a stool sample to the vets so they can rule out or confirm parasites.

He might have worms, like misskitty78 says, but it may be his butt is just itchy(lol!), or he has poop stuck to his bum.

Most of the time it is worms but it can be something more serious or he might have poop stuck to his butt and he needs help. See if he does and if he doesn’t than I would call the vet and ask them

Might have worms. You should take it to the vet. But observe him. If he is doing it regularly then rush to the vet.

Yes it is a good idea to take the cat to the vet. My friend’s cat did the same thing and it turned out to be worms.
