I am having a problem with my 7month old.. He’s been with us for 3 months and understands what the scratching posts are for… he just doesn’t like them. We have a household total of 7 cats and all use the various scratching posts/trees. I’ve tried everything and finally gave into him using the heavy plastic litter catcher outside of his litter box as his scratcher instead of the couch. Any creative solutions that do NOT include declawing?

Try Soft Paws A type of a small cap put over the claws which will pervent youe furnitures to be scratched. You can ask about the prices in pet stores.

You can always try the soft paws! They’re these little vinyl caps that you put over your cats’ claws. They don’t hurt them or impede them in any way, but they will keep your furniture safe! In the stores they run about $20-22 for a pack. I’ve been finding them online much cheaper, but with shipping being SO ridiculous these days, they end up being just as much as in the stores!

Here are some suggestions. First of all, spray all of the scratching posts with a catnip spray. This will probably get your cat to use the scratching post. On the couch, spray a citrus smelling spray, that can be found at your pet store. Also, apply soft paws like everyone else suggested.
Hope this helps,

Thanks everyone! I’ve done the catnip spray, plus the spraying of the furniture… BUT I have not tried the Soft Paws or any product like that. I have seen them on several on-line stores (I live in the sticks so stores are not an option.) However, there are more things I need to get so I can off-set the shipping that way! Thanks everyone! -G

i’m not so sure that a 7moth old is young enough to be trained to use a specific thing liuke the scratchers, i have the same problem with my cat, we didn’t train her at the young age, now she scratches everywhere, but don’t declaw your cat, looks like the soft paws others are suggesting seem to be a gd idea, try them, cause i’m ganna ask about them and probably get one for my cat.
