Our cat scratches the screen door when he wants in and has destroyed the screen mesh. What should we do? Some times he brings home a live mouse, and we don’t want him to just walk into the house with it!

There’s one other option you can investigate - they make a sort of cover for the screens. I initially thought this sounded great until I realized that it is of course solid and doesn’t let any air through. But perhaps it would work in your situation.
But just now as I was trying to locate this product I came across another one that appears to be a screen material so you’ll still have airflow, but it’s supposedly tougher.
I may look into that one myself!

Install a cat door. If he does bring in a live mouse and you can’t catch the mouse then let the cat deal with it. If he does bring in something - alive or dead - try to control your reaction! Don’t freak out or scold him - he is just trying to “share ” or show you his hunting skills and deserves praise rather than recrimination.
If you need to control when he enters or leaves the house or just can’t deal with his “gifts” , then change the door ( maybe one with screen just in the top section ?). It’s usually easier to change our own behavior ( or modify the house ) than to change a cat !
You have to retain a sense of humor when living with a cat …

Thanks for your suggestion. My sister also suggests a door with screen just in the top section which makes perfect sense. Fortunately, Ben will drop a mouse and leave it on the doormat when asked. Then we can slide the screen door open and let him in. We spoke to him about not hunting birds, and he no longer brings home captured birds (and no tell-tale feathers, either!). However, he remains adamant regarding mouse hunting. Says it's in the feline bill of rights ......
