“Purring is unique among cats and is not fully understood. A mother cat and her kittens use purring to communicate with each other, and a cat often purrs when enjoying the company of a human, like when she lies contentedly in your lap, indicating that she’s happy and relaxed.
On the other hand, cats that are suffering from an injury or any type of pain or distress have also been observed purring. Scientists believe that this might be a way to convey pain without a louder vocalization that might alert nearby predators to its vulnerability.”
