My young cat makes chirping noises all the time, is this normal?

Instead of meowing, my kitty chirps, especially right when I get home. I can’t tell if she’s hungry, wants to play, wants affection…

Cats have a much larger vocabulary than many humans realize. Different sounds and pitches of meows and other vocalizations are used by your cat to communicate with other cats and with humans. When a cat chirps, it’s using the sound as a friendly greeting, usually to its human family. A chirrup, or a chattering chirp, is often heard when a cat is viewing prey and is getting ready to pounce. Many theories abound as to the purpose of the chattering, but it’s most likely a sign of the cat’s excitement about seeing birds, squirrels, chipmunks, or other possible prey. It could also be a sign of your cat’s frustration if the desired prey is out of reach. Chirping is a perfectly normal part of your cat’s vocabulary.
