How to tell if cats are getting along?

4 Answers  |  Asked By: ziggy_bo43   680

This is such a stupid question… but I have only recently become a multiple cat owner. I am trying to figure out if my new & old cat actually like each other yet… they’re so weird, I just can’t tell! I don’t know if he’s trying to play, or if he’s attacking her… I don’t know if she’s scared of him or just doesn’t really want to be his friend.

So how do they “play”??? Does it look like fighting??? Do they mouth each other like dogs do? I have never really watched multiple cats interact in a play situation. I know dogs - I know they wrestle and mouth and sometimes look like they are fighting, when really they’re just playing and having fun. Is that ever the case with cats, too?

He (the newbie - 1 year old) seems to like her (3 year old) - he chases her and wants to be by her, and sometimes pounces on her (that’s what I can’t tell is playing or not… does he pounce to be mean, or is he pouncing to play???). But she just seems to tolerate him. She just stares at him with what looks like disgust, then struts away and goes to sit in the closet. I don’t care if they become BFFs or anything, that’d be great, of course, but I just want to make sure that they are both comfortable with each other and that she isn’t scared of him. They both sleep in our bed with us (most nights about a foot away from each other), and they eat next to each other, but I can’t tell if she is scared of him or just doesn’t want to be buddies.

Ideas on how I can tell?

It sounds like they are getting along, especially if they are sleeping next to each other nightly.

Yes, Cats that are playing do often look like they are fighting, but as long as one cat isn’t “beating up” on another cat it should be fine.

A tell tale sign that they ARE getting along… is grooming. The “lower” cat should eventually groom the “higher” cat as a sign of submission and the higher cat should eventually return the favor in acceptance.

it seems to me that they are pretty good buddies…..when they play it does look like they are fighting….if they arent breaking the skin then they are just playing…he wants to play because he is still very young….and she knows hes young thats why shes tolerating it but eventually she will start to play back….i had the same situation with a kitten and an older cat…. have no worries if there is no bleeding they are fine

they may not totally like eachother at first but definately look for bleeding and maybe hissing, other than that they’re fine. and the grooming thing is right, once they start doing that you’re all ok….
