Fight or play

5 Answers  |  Asked By: sgiansante   53

I recently got a kitten to accompany my 2 year old cat. They get a little rough towards each other. How do I know if its play or if they’re fighting? (I haven’t seen any bite marks, claw marks or any blood on any of them)

It sounds like your cats are playing to me.

Pouncing is normal for kittens. Your older cat may not appreciate being pounced but as long as no one is really getting hurt it’s safe to assume their playing.

They are probably play-fighting like lion cubs on nat geo. You can tell that they are excited if there tail is up and their ears forward while playing. If angry, usually their tail will be down, or curled between legs (protecting the bits) and their ears back (even slightly, protecting from damage) Also while playing, they will usually not make any noise. You would know if it was a real fight, I guarantee that you wouldn\\\’t have to ask. Sometimes, one cat goes too far and does scratch or bite too hard, the victim will often yelp or give a high pitch meow. They then stop, dont worry cats have very high pain threshold and do not want to hurt each other.
