Newly adopted cat in hiding, won’t come out

8 Answers  |  Asked By: Riddler   1

We adopted a 3-year old female cat yesterday. As soon as we got her out of the carrier, she ran and hid. I found her under a chest and tried to coax her out with food and toys and sweet talk, with no success. We tried waiting, no luck. Later I found her under a bed and tried again, at length, to talk her out. Again, no luck. She didn’t look panicky or uncomfortable, just looked away from me. This morning she is nowhere to be found. She hasn’t touched the food, and the kitty litter has not been used.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ed

Cats can often be skittish in new surroundings. It will take time for her to come out of her shell, there is no instant fix. They are creatures of habit and sudden changes in environment are stressful for them, so they need time to get used to things.

In the meantime, try to find the cat and confine her to one quiet room for a while with her litter box, water, food and toys. Once she gets used to the new sounds and smells of your home you can try coaxing her out of hiding.

If you have children and other pets these can be sources of stress for the animal in this transition period so you would be best keeping contact limited to brief introductions until your cat is more confident (and with other pets, just let them sniff each other under a door for a while)

Totally agree - especially with an adult cat! It's a lot harder to quickly adjust when the cat is an adult; cats are creatures of habit. Once you find her again, get her in a safe room. Don't force her out of her comfort zone!!

Cats can be afraid once you bring them home to other pets. Try calming him/her down.

My cat did that to when we first got him, but it took him a couple weeks to get out and around. My cat is a total inside cat, and he hid under the bed all of the time. We was so worried that we even took him to the vet for it!

Cats can find their way into really small places. My cousins hid in between the dresser drawers after she moved. She had to take the dresser apart to get the cat out. Also sometimes because of cats coloring they can hid really well.

Thanks to all of you for the advice. You can be sure I will follow it, but believe it or not I am still working on step one. We have searched the house several times but have not seen hide nor hair of her. We have looked under/behind everything that has an underneath or a behind, and inside everything we can think of that she might be able to crawl inside of. Her food and kittly litter still have not been touched. No doors or windows were open, so I am sure she has not gotten out.

Thanks again,

Ed

try looking in a cupboard...i recently adopted a nine year old and she is the same way and its been about 2 months and she still hides and wont come near me...i put her in a room by herself with her litter box, food, and water...she has no where to hide in the room which "forces" her to interact with me i would suggest trying that.

At 3 AM this morning, after about 36 hours in hiding, she made a brief appearance, had some food, and used the kitty litter.

We still don’t know where her hiding place is, but at least she’s OK.

I have a suspicion that my aggressive searching might have seemed threatening to her, so for the moment we are just going to let her hide until she wants to come out.

Thanks for all the good advice and well wishes.
