My cat wants to make me his

5 Answers  |  Asked By: junie   1

I rescued my cat off the street when he was about 6 weeks old. He is nearly one and a half now and is seriously obsessed with me! I work from home so unless I am away on business, we are together 24/7. He sleeps in the bed with us and follows me around the flat everywhere I go.. When he was still a baby, he started kneading me which I know is a sign of affection so I let him but then as he got older, it turned into a mating ritual! He never leaves the house but only because he doesn’t want to. We let him sit on the balcony, leave him there on his own and still he never leaves. We have lots of stray cats living around the garden and he sees them but doesn’t show any interest in them, just me! Our vet said that the kneading / mating is fine and it is normal, but yesterday, he took it one step further and actually started biting me as they do when they are mating and I really don’t feel this is “normal” anymore. Apart from this he seems happy with his life so I don’t want to neutre him just because I am uncomfortable but I don’t want to be his “bitch” anymore! He is a very well behaved cat except for this one problem, we never had any problems with him from day 1. I really want to sort this out befoe it gets out of hand. Help me!

PLEASE HAVE YOUR CAT NEUTERED. It will reduce his chances of several cancers, reduce or even eliminate inappropriate sexual behaviors, extend his lifespan and save you the trouble of dealing with territorial spraying and marking as he gets older (trust me, by the time he is 3 he *will* begin spraying, all intact tomcats do, and that smell DOES NOT COME OUT with any cleaner and takes years to fade completely).

He may be content to sit on the porch at the moment but he will eventually begin to roam in search of females in heat. If you want to keep this cat as a pet and keep him alive and in good health, get him neutered (which will also prevent him from contributing to the feral population and the millions of unwanted kittens and cats that get euthanized every year in shelters) and keep him indoors.

6 weeks old is also too young for a kitten to be separated from its mother and siblings and kittens weaned at this age pretty commonly develop behavior issues, especially a lack of bite inhibition and not scratching, those \\\”manners\\\” are usually taught to kittens by the mother around 7-12 weeks old.

A lot of cats do the kneading thing and he will probably always be a velcro-kitty (not that there\\\’s anything wrong with that!) but having him neutered will calm him down considerably and eventually as his hormones even out he should stop trying to turn you into a surrogate mate. If you are worried about cost, most communities have low-cost spay/neuter options. Ask your vet, call the local animal shelter/animal control and ask around. Male cats are generally cheaper to sterilize than females as well.

I too would suggest neutering as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it may not bring a halt to your problem, but it may make it easier to prevent his action from becomming habit. I have a female stray that I got spayed six months ago at about two yrs of age. Most of my cats are ferals, so when she wanted to sit in my lap I didn\\\’t mind. But apparently my petting of her head and neck is overly stimulating, and her kneading of my thigh was too much (I think she has sewing needles instead of claws). But when I tried to stop the kneading, she would try to nip at my hand or wrist. Now I just move her off my lap and my petting is more cursory. This is not meant to discourage you from getting him neutered, just pointing out possibilities. Good luck.

Hi, get him neutered. Check with your local Humane Shelter to see if they have Spay/Neuter certificates…that wll help with the cost. Good luck!

Thank you for your answers. It was always our intention to have him neutered at some point, I know it is the best option considering his wellbeing but our vet recommended us to hold on for as long as we could (until he is 3 or so) so that he could grow properly to avoid any unwanted side effects in the future. We are not worried about the cost, just his wellbeing and so far, apart from the obsession with me, he seems to be fine the way he is so we will give him a little more time and have him neutered in the future.

I know 6 weeks is too early for him to be seperated from his mum and siblings, unfortunately he was deserted and we waited for 3 days before taking him in just in case he somehow found his way back or his mum did come back for him which she didn\\\’t.

Cats and dogs can be neutered or spayed as early as 8 weeks old. 6 months is the traditional age. There is no reason to wait 3 years unless you are talking about a giant-breed dog which have bone development issues. Your vet may have some outdated information about the effects of neutering on the development of the male urinary tract that have been long proven untrue.

Yes, some mother cats are somewhat incompetent. I have a feral mother that led one of her kittens away at about six wks of age, and left it. I was never able to find it. Then at seven wks led two more away. I was able to find those and brought them back home. The mother just couldn\\\’t seem to get rid of them fast enough, so she moved into the woods about a block away. At least the four remaining had each other to learn from, and they also had their self-appointed guardian, Tribble, a Himalayan.
