My cat uses the litter box for pee, but has recently been reluctant to poo in it. I have to pull the box out of the closet and take the hood off and then he jumps in and poos and then bolts immediately. He still uses the litter for pee. The litter is located in our closet and is a hooded litter box. He’s 6 yrs old and has used it all his life

There is something wrong with your cat. This is the only way it knows how to tell you something is wrong. The way to get it to stop is to figure out what is wrong and correct it.

It’s your job now to figure it out. I would start with a trip to the vet to check for medical issues and then go forward on the below list from there.

Factors Contributing to Inappropriate Elimination

• Medical Conditions: Cats avoiding the litter pan should be examined by a veterinarian to rule out a medical condition. Laboratory tests will need to be performed in most cases, however, if a condition does exist, immediate treatment will help resolve the behavioral problem. Possible medical conditions include: colitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease, or feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). Medical conditions such as arthritis, FLUTD, anal sac disease, and some forms of colitis, which cause pain urinating or defecating may also result in inappropriate elimination

• Stress: Cats of all ages experience stress at some point in their lives (just like us). Stress can be a major cause of inappropriate elimination, and known stressors such as moving, changes in routine, or changes within the family structure (new members added or family members leaving home) can result in inappropriate elimination. Reducing these stressors or decreasing their impact on the household will benefit your cat and you, too.

• Box Location & Contents: Some cats may not like where their box is located; too close to their food or water, in a high traffic area, or on a different level of the house than where they spend most of their time. Some cats are very particular and will not defecate in the same box in which they urinate or go into a box which has been used by another cat. Most cats do not like a dirty litter box. Clean out waste from their litter boxes at least once daily, and wash the litter boxes weekly so that they don’t decide to eliminate elsewhere in your home.

Try for about a few days to leave it out of the closet with the ood off. If he starts to poo in it then, just put it back in the closet with out the hood again for a few days, after if he has pooed in it then put the hood back on it in the closet. Hopefully this will work, if not ask the vet what to do, try to figure out something

Questions:
Did you move the litter box somewhere else?
If you did then put it back to the same spot that it was before ans see what happens.

No the litter box has been there for the last 6 months and for the last 4 months he was using it fine. I noticed that for poo he hesitates before going in. I think i'll try your suggestion to see if it works...

If the box had been moved, the cat wouldn't pee there either.

It may be the litter type you are using. well if you have changed it recently. Or maybe your cat is not liking the area that it is in anymore. Have you spilled anything or done anything in/to your closet lately. Cats don;t like chnges so have you changes anything or added something to that area lately?

That’s extremely peculiar that your cat will pee but not poop in the litter box. Kat is right–it may be an illness. You should take your kitty to the vet and see what he says.
