My cat used to do the exact same thing, here is my story:
My cat had just became one year old. Her name is and was Kate. I had grown very attached to her, petting her all the time and because of this my little dark Calico became very attached to me. Then one night I woke up to something that sounded like this:
Mew… Mrow?… MMMEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRMMMM!
Not only did this wake up me, it woke up my whole family. Kate was standing infront of my door making as much noise as her voice box could handle. We began to bring her into the basement at night and put a chair infront of the door so that she couldn`t get out, but kate would always somehow find a way. One day when I was thinking about it I got the idea that maybe she just wanted to come into my room. I always shut it when I went to bed so no light from our hallway could get in. While a person could just twist the door knob, Kate had no way of getting into my room. I tried leaving it open a tiny fraction that night and as I expected Kate came in. She jumped onto my bed, sniffed my face and then walked to the end of the bed and sat there almost all night. Kate has been doing that ever since, never making a noise. She is weird.
Anyways, I don`t think your cat is meowing it`s heart out because it is dark in the house at night. Cat eyes reflect light very well so they need very little light to see perfectly fine. In other words, cats aren`t afraid of the dark. Your cat may just be hunting for attention. In the wild, adult cats never meow, this is because a meow is a noise a cat makes to it`s mother only. Does your cat meow to you the most out of all your family members jimbob? If so, your a mom. The cat is therefor probably addressing you when it meows at night. The most common things cats meow about are for food, petting and brushing (if you brush your cat).
In my case, I didn`t punish my cat for meowing, but in some cases you need to, like if the cat just wants attention you can`t pet your kitty all night. Humans aren`t nocturnal. If you want your cat to stop meowing, you have to make it associate quietness with food, treats, attention, good things in general and meowing with the evil spray can, people ignoring kitty and bad things in general. Remember, if your cat meows and you look at it, respond, or something like that you are giving it a reward for talking. This will make your cat think that talking is a good thing. Give your cat more attention therefor when it is silent. Note: Cats take almost any noise you make in respond to it as a reward, even shushing.
There is one other reason through why a cat may make noise, because it is sick or ill. Almost all wild animals have a tendency to try and hide any sort of illness they have until they can`t anymore because a sick animal is a weak animal and in the wild survival is the fittest. Weak animals are picked off by predators. House cats take the wild instinct to hide they`re health problems with them. If your cat suddenly began to meow pitifully, out of the blue much more then it did a short while ago then it may be admitting that it is very ill. A cat would only do this if their is something seriously wrong. So if your cat is usually quiet and has became loud all of a suddenly take it to the vet for a check up to make sure everything is fine. Better safe then sorry.

There are lots of reasons. Do you shut them in a room? It might be too Cold or hot. Are they with food? They might be hungry. Are they alone. They might want out or a friend.
