Move put cat in tailspin

2 Answers  |  Asked By: ecoalson   1

I recently moved and my 10-year-old cat has started occassionally urinating outside of the litter box, which he has never done before. How can I get him back into the litter box consistently?

This happened to my 2-year old male cat when we moved. It turned out that the stress of the move had exacerbated a urinary tract infection, leading to a blockage in his urinary tract. Make sure it isn\\\’t just stress, first. Look for excessive licking of genitals, straining to urinate, urinating on cold/smooth surfaces, less urine volume, blood in urine. If he\\\’s free from these symptoms, it\\\’s likely just the stress of the new move.

You may want to \\\”start over\\\” with him. Treat him like you\\\’ve just brought him home for the first time. Confine him to one room, a \\\”safe room\\\”, where he has access to food, water, a litter box, a place to hide, and a soft bed. After a few days to a week, start letting him explore more and more of the house. Make sure, too, that you are THOROUGHLY washing the areas where he has urinated. Use a cleaning product that actually breaks down the enzymes in the urine (like Nature\\\’s Miracle). If he smells his urine, he\\\’ll continue to think that\\\’s an acceptable place to urinate.

Another alleged stress reliever you may want to try is Feliway. It\\\’s supposedly cat pheromones that calms the cat down. I used the plug-in diffuser when we got our second cat, and our first one accepted him within a week. I don\\\’t know if it was because of the diffuser or my cat\\\’s disposition, but it was a painless process nonetheless. It might be worth the investment.

Good luck!!!
