I tried to play a trick on my cat, but the joke was on me!

4 Answers  |  Asked By: ReniSqueaky   159

My cat needed some new litter. She still had a little bit of litter left in her box. I put the litter in there on top of it, thinking she wouldn’t notice, but then she went on my bathroom rug! I think she should be over this urinary tract infection thing, so would she still be using something else? Or maybe I should scoop out her box more? Maybe she doesn’t like using the box when there are already lumps in it? I scoop her box once a day, but is that enough or do I need to scoop the box more? What do I do?

It sounds like you are keeping your cats litter-box very clean. Once a day is perfect. If your cat still doesn\\\’t want to use the litter box, it may just be that she needs privacy. Is the litter box located in a part of your house with a lot of traffic? Maybe move it some place quieter.

Cats also sometimes don\\\’t use their litter-box is they feel threatened by something. Squeaky is the only cat in your house right? If there are cats outside the house that don\\\’t get along with her, that could cause her to urinate or spray in a place she shouldn\\\’t. Keep the neighborhood cats isolated from your cat and the problem will disappear.

If you are renovating or redecorating the house, or if a friend is staying over for a while, your cat may feel like her territory is being threatened, and you will have the same problem. Luckily, if this is the case your cat will stop urinating once she gets used to the change.

I agree with Cedar.

Also, you mention that she was suffering a UTI? Are you quite certain that she is no longer infected - you\\\’ve followed up with the vet? It has taken a long time for us to clear B-Rock\\\’s UTI, and unfortunately he was having accidents still after 3 weeks of antibiotics.

Well, we took Squeaky, our only cat to the vet and she took the medicine the doctor gave her until it was gone...should we have taken her back just to make sure she was healed?

ReniSqueaky - I\\\’m trying to post this in response to your comment on my answer (surprise, surprise, comments are acting up!):

Yes - absolutely. After our first round of antibiotics, B-Rock was still showing symptoms of an infection (and had a new symptom of blood in the urine), so they put him on a new antibiotic for another 2 1/2 weeks. I would check back with them, especially if you\\\’re still seeing symptoms of the infection (the inappropriate elimination).
