We keep our lid down because we have cats who will drink from the toilet otherwise. Gross as it sounds, they’re looking for fresh water as the toilet is flushed often and the water entering the toilet is cold and fresh. Try changing your cats water more often during the day and use a glass, stainless steel (only stainless steel) or ceramic bowl…never use plastic.
Plastic bowls are sturdy but they have some negatives. Plastic scratches and those open areas become breeding grounds for germs. Some cats develop allergies to plastic and end up with a cat acne on their chins. Best never to use plastic.
My birds, cats, and dogs get freshly washed water bowls every day. Don’t just dump the water and add more, wash it in hot soapy water and rinse well. Or have a spare bowl so they have a fresh bowl every day.

Some people use sani-flush or something similar in their toilets. These are deadly to cats. Many of these automatic toilet bowl cleaners contain bleach and that is deadly to cats.

My cat doesn't drink out of the toilet. However, she plays with the toilet water!

We have a couple automatic fountains that telegramsam mentioned. Many of our cats play in the water. I have seen them all drinking more since we got them though we still have some that want it straight from the faucet.

Are you telling me, that even though that the toilet itself can be very germy, the water is really fresh and cold???? Is it sanitary/safe?

No - it is not sanitary or safe for your cat to drink!! She's saying that when the water first rushes in, it is cold/fresh - it's coming straight from the pipes. That cool, moving water is more appealing to a cat than stagnant water in the dish. However... it then enters your toilet bowl... which is not the most germ-free environment. Thus you should NOT let your cat drink from it (especially if you use one of those clean-with-every-flush products).

We also just bought one of those cat water fountains to see if that will encourage his water intake. He still likes the toilet, his water glass (not kidding!) and water bowl. Thanks for all of the suggestions and input!

I can’t say I’ve ever seen my cat Rose do that. I started putting the lid down when I first got her because she was 2-lb kitten and I was afraid she might climb up, fall in and have a hard time getting out! She’s 7 lbs now but I put the lid down still out of habit most of the time. The few times I’ve forgotten I’ve never seen her try to drink from it.
But yea, some cats like to drink from weird places, my cat always jumps in the shower after I’ve left it to lap up the drops from the bottom of the tub for some weird reason. The toilet is probably not the best though for sanitary reasons so I agree with the others here and say you should close the lid.
Some suggestions to get your cat to drink more water (very important for kidney and urinary tract health!):
-Try moving your cat’s water dish away from its food dish. Some cats for whatever reason do not want to drink water that is right next to their food. Go figure
-Change the cat’s water several times a day, some cats will only drink cold water and won’t drink it once it’s reached room temp. You can throw a couple ice cubes in the bowl also to keep it cool longer. Don’t put it in direct sunlight either.
-Get a “cat fountain” as some cats only like to drink running water (if you notice your cat drinking from the sink or bathtub to get the drops from the faucet this is probably the case), they have these at pet stores like petco or petsmart and probably many others
-Try putting a water filter on your faucet. Tap water in some areas can have a high mineral content (”hard water”) or other impurities and might taste bad to your cat (and you!).
- If your cat just adamantly won’t drink much water no matter what you do, give your cat canned food as canned cat food is about 70-80% water by weight generally and will help to keep your cat hydrated better. Dry pet foods have almost no moisture content by comparison. If your cat (or dog, though it’s rarer for dogs) develops urinary tract or kidney complaints, you should definitely start feeding wet food to help support their kidney and urinary tract function.

I wish I could alternate canned food for Hobbs with his dry food as a source of additional moisture, but unfortunately, he only likes dry food. :) It would help with his kidney problems I am sure. Hobbs likes water from the toilet, water glass, faucet, and water bowl, he rotates between all of them.

definetly wash out their bowl everyday or at least every other day. One of my cats is really finicky about her water. She won’t drink out of the toilet but she likes to drink out of the faucet and also,if i put her bowl on the floor she won’t drink out of it. I have to keep her water bowl on my bathroom counter or she won’t touch it. I have 3 water bowls,2 are on the floor and the other cats will drink out of any of them…Cali on the other hand will only drink out of the one on the counter.

If your cat is drinking out of the toilet, it probably means that your cat doesn’t like the water it has right now. You may have to keep the water bowl cleaned every day, and also make sure that it has fresh water every day. Drinking out of the toilet is not sanitary, nor is it good for anyone in your houses health.
Also, keep the lid down. Keeping the lid closed prevents the cat from dirnking out of it. Or, if your cat’s food, water, and litter box is outside any bathroom in the house, closing the door after you lave the room can work too.
I use to just fill my cat’s water when I noticed it needed water. (Like, if she’d constantly follow me around, or sit in the bathtub, stuff like that.) And I only ever cleaned the bowl every once in a while, so I”m pretty sure my cat didn’t always like the water.
So always make sure that the cat has a clean water bowl with fresh water.

We just put the lid down. Cats and dogs both seem to like the fresh water in the toliet. Ewww. Anyway we have the habit of putting it down. Best way to keep them out.

A while back(like a year ago) my cat Keke loved drinking out of the toilet!!! My dog would finish off her water, and instead of sitting next to her bowl meowing(she meows when it’s empty) she would run to the toilet if we didn’t put it down!!! But everytime we walk by the water dish we check. (we didn’t check as much before, but when our dog became hurt and sick, we had to make sure she has fresh water asap)

My cat doesn’t actually drink from the toilet, but they do hang around it. If your cat drinks from the toilet, I’d keep the lid down.

We also keep our lid closed so that Earl Gray doesn’t get tempted by the “running water fountain.” (Toilet.) He likes to play in water too, so the toilet is definitely off limits. Cats love cold, fresh (and sometimes running) water, and toilets can have chemicals and germs that are dangerous. Good idea to keep the lid closed.

Just like Catsofmany said, keep the lid closed. Your cat is drinking out of the toilet because the toilet is flushed often, providing fresh, clean, water. To prevent this from happening, keep the lid closed and replace the water in your cats water bowl often. Or, you can just try a filtered water bowl that has fresh water flowing continuously.

Catsofmany is right, keep the lid closed, it prevents the cat from drinking out of the toilet, for it does seem gross. Catsofmany is also right when cats are looking for fresh water, and every time you flush its new water. Thats why many times cats perfer to drink out of the dripping faucet. My cat will sit in the bathtub and wait for a drop of water to fall, she’ll catch it with her paw, and ‘drink it’ from her paw.
