Any kind of urine is ammonia. Some animals are stronger than others like rabbits.
Covering their waste is an instinct that kittens are born with. They don’t learn it from their mothers because mothers never eliminate near their nests.
In the wild cats will cover their waste to protect themselves from drawing attention from predators.
In a colony of feral ats, the subordinate cat will cover their waste while the dominant stray cats leave waste uncovered. Indoor cats will bury their waste usually because they feel subordinate to the human family. But in multicat families, sometimes a dominant cat will leave his/her waste uncovered as a way to claim his status as a dominant cat. By leaving waste uncovered, he has stated the territory has been claimed.

Mmm... actually mammals excrete nitrogen in the form of urea, which over time does break down into ammonia, which is why "fresh" pee smells quite different from "old" pee, typically. Birds on the other hand excrete ammonia directly. Tru fax! :P

Oops, scratch that. Birds excrete *uric acid* rather than *urea* but both of those do break down into ammonia after being exposed to the air. Tadpole I believe excrete actual ammonia, but change over to uric acid after metamorphosis. Weird, huh?
