my cat won’t clean his butt. What should I do?

If it’s dirty you can clean it for him with baby wipes or a warm wet wash cloth.
Can your kitty reach his bum to do his cleaning? Often kitties are overweight and can’t reach. It’s not that they don’t do it… it’s that they can’t do it.

Do not use baby wipes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they have a certain chemical in them that can hurt the cat if it is licked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Kat about the obesity part. Your cat's legs may be too short to reach its butt. But I also agree with hewittk. The chemicals in a baby wipe will make it worse by possibly causing a rash or poisoning your cat's tongue and encouraging him NOT to wipe his butt.

wht a advice u r giving use a baby wipes gone mad it has chemicals that can even kill a cat if the cat licked that place never use baby wipes you can clean it witha wet tissue paper

I fully DISAGREE with all three comments that baby wipes will harm the cat. It will NOT harm the cat... and that is why every single mother uses baby wipes to not only clean the butt of thier human baby, but to clean thier face, hands and body when they make a mess of themselves.

Oh and I forgot to mention that since the can't can't reach to clean it's own butt, I'm sure it can't reach to lick baby wipe stuff off either.

i agree with kat. you can use baby wipes. the cemicals will not harm these cats at all

my first cat wouldnt clean its self so i to set fire to it and now the rspca wont let me have another.

Bloody! You are very cruel and so is your name. It is NOT right to burn cats. I am glad you can't have anther cat. I have reported you! That is mean! Please, don't do that again! :( I have 3 rules in my house: 1. Do not hurt things 2. Do not hurt others 3. Do not hurt yourself Now, please, don't be cruel to your animals. Thanks! Mama Mia

I have to agree with Kat. Baby wipes are just fine. My Manx has trouble knowing when he has a mess back there due to his complete lack of a tail and my vet told me to try baby wipes. The only problem I saw was that the taste was not quite to his liking. I would also suggest a batheing wipe made specifically for cats. Often they include aloe vera and other soothing agents that can help that area if it is irritated. They work wonders for Pig.

my cat can reach his BUTT so my cat does clean its BUTT.

Hey bloody! You should take some mental pills! Who lights up his cat? If you don't want a cat give it away don't kill it! Im glad you can't have another cat! I M going to report you until your banned for life! These creatures are fragile and you set them on fire! May you die a merciful death you cretin!

It is not natural for a cat to stop grooming, as this is a survival behavior. Cats are such obsessive groomers in order to neutralize their scent when hunting for prey.
Reason why a cat would refuse to clean itself are various: weight issues, arthritis, illness, depression. Is this the only behavior that has changed recently?
This behavior can sometimes be a result of a cat that was taken prematurely from its mother. It learns how to groom properly from mom, so if it’s human mother replacement didn’t “teach” him to groom, he may just need to be pointed in the right direction.

Animals can be more compassionate than humans. Please address your fat cat's weight problem - obesity is just as unhealthy for cats as it is for us.
0
Yes. Fat cats can run into horrible issues. Like diseases. Please call your vet or something to find out what sort of diet your cat should be on so you can feed it correctly and it won't stay overweight.
1
I would either use some cat wipes (for cats) or a wash cloth.

i totally argree with u and Kat babys lick themslefs and ditto with cats so wipes do not hurt them.

make sure that it is not a health issue. you may need to bring him to the vet. how old his he? young kittens sometimes need you to rub the area with a luke-warm cloth, to stimulate the area, so that they can use the bathroom. if you dont do it, or if another cat doesnt do it, the kitten could die. if he is not a kitten, is he too fat? fat cats cant reach, so they would need you to change his diet and help him while he is unable to do it himself.

The reaosn is because maby your cat can’t reach, It want to lick but it can’t. Like Kat said it could be its because your cat is over weight or maby because the body is to short for it ’s butt, it cou7ld be a disfromation
1
If your cat doesn’t clean his butt, clean it for him. you can fold up a tissue paper, wet it and softly clean it up. Or you can use baby wipes. But it’s a bit abnormal for a cat not to clean himself. Maybe he’s having some problem. You should take him to the vet and have it checked out.

Well for just the butt you can use baby wipes, but the fun way for me is to buy cat & kitten shampoo at the store and like clean his whole body for him. It helps the extra hair get off and stops him for shedding for 2 weeks! I useually get my mom to help me becuase my cat doesn’t stay still and sometimes my mom does it herself. it’s kinda fun. i make my mom use her hands to get the butt part of it but then she washes her hands with the cat shampoo. you don’t have to use or hand you could just use a paper towel or something.

I think that if you took him to see more cats that he mite see them clean ther butt and he mite sart doing what they do I know that I like to fite he mite like to fite in to and if he does you can take him there a lot and he mite sart doing it all the time at home and clean his butt some times. anyway what I am trying to tell you is take him to pla with all cats were you live and let him see that they do it and he mite want to try it and he mite feel beder than he has be for

Go to the pet store and get tush wipes. They are made for cats and have a scent and taste that cats like. Use these to clean your kitties bum. As he gets use to the smell and taste, he should start to clean his own bum. Otherwise, he and his brother’s may end up on Jerry Springer LOL!!!

lost cats do not lick ther botum but they will whip there botums on the grass.

Hey I hope this answer works for you. Some cats can’t lick their butts because ther are to big. Or maybe just for any reason! Try wipping your cats butt with a baby wipe. make sure you have an old mitt or something to protect your hands for being bitten. Also don’t hurt your cat!

That’s kind of funny that your cat doesn’t clean his butt. But there are ways to fix it. Next time you see that her butt is a little dirty, clean it yourself. My cat used to have feces hanging out of her butt sometimes. But we always cleaned it for her and she doesn’t do that anymore.
If that doesn’t work, ask your vet for a solution.

If your cat doesn’t clean his butt, clean it for him. My cat used to have her feces dangling out of her butt, and once we constantly cleaned it up, she stopped having the problem. You should also make sure that you cat is feeling all right. This may be a symptom of some strange illness.
If cleaning the cat’s butt doesn’t work, ask your vet for a solution. If you do clean the cat’s butt yourself, use a warm, damp paper towel or washcloth (better yet). Baby wipes have chemicals in them that may cause your cat to get a rash in the area.

see here he might be facing tecnical difficalties its up to him to solve the problem

Technical difficulties? Cats aren't machines!!! And if the cat is doing this, it's likely that it can't solve the problem itself.

How old is the cat, maybe it doesn’t smell the odor coming from its butt, and i would try to show him/her its butt and then clean it for him/her.

clean their butt with a warm damp rag OR use baby wipes. They have chemicals that sanitize so they it does not get a rash or get infected.

You may have to wipe his bottom for him if he is not licking it. Also, he might be licking his bottom, and you might not know it. But just in case, wipe his bottom with a baby wipe, or if you don’t have a baby, use a wet paper towel. I am telling you this because my cat used to wipe his bottom on the carpet after using the litter box. Then I had to clean the carpet. It’s pretty yucky!

Wipe his bottom with a diaper wipe or a wet paper towel. I am telling you this because my cat wiped his bottom on the carpet a few times. That was yucky! I had to clean it up! Also, he might be cleaning it, and you might not realize it!

well maybe you could get it cleaned or you could clean it your self. my grandma’s cat is like that but it is because he can’t reach. so maybe you should cut some if his fur if it is all over his fur.

i AGREE WITH USING THE WET BABY WIPES TRY USING THE ONES FOR SENSITIVE SKIN INSTEAD OF THE REGULAR ONES.AND IF THAT DONT WORK WHICH I KNOW IT WILL TRY USING A WARM WASH CLOTH AND BE GENTLE TO INSURE YOUR CAT THAT HE IS IN GOOD HANDS.GOOD LUCK ON WIPING THAT LITTLE BOOTY.

As long as there is no physical problem that makes it impossible, you can teach a cat to clean it’s bottom.
Watch when it goes to use the litter tray. Immediately after, wipe its bottom gently with a tissue or soft cloth that has a tiny bit of butter mixed with marmite or vegemite. The cat will be alerted by the smell, and will clean it off. Do this a few times, and the cat will continue this behaviour after using the litter tray, without the need for your further intervention.
It worked well on my cat which, at about 2 years of age just stopped cleaning it’s bottom for no aparent reason. The vet checked her and found nothing wrong. So I just “retrained” her.
0
Don’t Use Baby wipes. The Cemicals are harmful!! You Should try to clean it for him/her with a clean wash-cloth. I Agree with Kat. His/Her Legs might be too short.
0
O come on Just take the cat to the vet already. I think It is the best thing to do. (But what do i know i’m only 12.)
0
The vet is the way to go. Or you could use a clean cloth and do it your self. Or maybe I’ll just shut up. (But what do I know? I’m 12)

Whatever you do, DO NOT USE BABY WIPES! I repeat DO NOT USE BABY WIPES on CATS!!!!!!
They have chemicals that can harm your cat or can and most likely would cause fatality!!
Would you lick a baby wipe? Oh really, you wouldn’t? Well, I don’t think you should let your cat innocently lick it either!

I HAD TO HAND RAISE MY KITTENS CAUSE THE MOM DIED WHEN THEY WAS 2 WEEKS OLD AND IN THIS TIME I HAD THE VET ON SPEED DIAL. I WAS TOLD THERE ARE KITTEN WIPES BECAUSE AS A MOTHER YOU HAVE TO TEACH THEM TO GO TO THE POTTY AND CLEAN THEM LIKE A MOTHER CAT WOULD DO. WELL THE VET SAID SOMETIMES IT CAN COST A BIT MUCH FOR WIPES AND TOLD ME TO USE BABY WIPES..THEY ARE VERY VERY SENSITVE AND VERY SAFE TO USE ON KITTENS..ID TRY THAT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS

One of my cats does clean his butt, but he doesn’t do a good job. I periodically wipe his butt with wipes for cats or a waterless bath( it’s a spray ) on a baby washcloth. I guess you could use baby wipes but they have wipes specifically formulated for cats so i really don’t see the point.
0
You can also take your kitty to a groomer and get a sanitary groom. Experienced groomers will shave the area around her anus and tummy which keeps her from dragging poop around.
0
well first clean it your self but dont use a baby or clorox wipe use a cloth with warm water if he continues then i suggest taking him to the vet

Tiger, my 16 year old Tabby, first came home with me when I was 7 years old and I wondered the same thing….for a few weeks I was wiping his butt with regular toilet paper like humans do , until my mom explained to me that cats have a natural “cleansing system” for their G.I. system. Now that Tiger is older, I notice sometimes that he has a little left behind crusted to his fur once in a while, so I just use a wash cloth and warm water to wipe it off or bathe him if needed. In your cats case, he might have some sort of infection or worms going on if he completely refuses to clean himself…I would probably get him to the vet or at least call them.

I have 2 Female cats, both dont clean their owns butts but they are very close so they clean each others, it my seem discusting but its like a mother cat taking care of her kittens, thats how close my cats are. I’ve tried baby wipes and wet cloths, but the poo does not come off so i let them clean each other.

Try feeding your cat a little less if you are allready not feeding him a lot i’d say ask the vet.

I think you should get pet wipes. I once had a cat and he was more of an outdoor cat and even though, he cleaned himself alot and cats are relatively clean, sometimes he’d go play outside and come back extremely dirty. So when he got so dirty, that he couldn’t even clean himself, we’d use pet wipes on him and you can just find those at Wal-Mart or something. Or just use a papertowel and soap. I hope this helps.

I would try a damp cloth. I wouldnt use baby wipes, I dont think it will harm the cat but just to be safe you shouldnt use them. If you do use wipes then you said he couldnt even lick his butt anyway so he should be fine. Though washcloths I believe will do the job.
