I’m new to this site and have read most of the posts regarding letting your cats outdoors. I have had my cats since they were kittens - for about 5 years now. They have never really been outside…maybe a few times when they’ve escaped to our patio. Recently I thought maybe it was good for them to be outdoors and let them out - while I supervised - for about 10 minutes. I did this about 4 times within about 3 weeks but then read on this site about how dangerous it can be and stopped it. It’s been about a month since I last let them out. My problem is with the older cat. She now stands at the front door and incessantly meows until I either pick her up and move her or she hears a loud noise outside. My other cat doesn’t care either way. Is there any way to get her to stop or is this pretty much my punishment for being ignorant in letting them out in the first place? I read in another post that once you let them out they can become “addicted” Is there a kitty rehab for this

They will adapt to not going out. We’ve had many outside cats that we adopted that wanted to go back out. We didn’t let them and they will stop asking. You are doing the best thing for your cats to keep them safe, healthy and give them the longest life possible! One cat would bolt through the door every time it was opened. Usually just moving them away from the door works but he was persistent. We resorted to a spray bottle of water kept at the door. Be patient and she will stop asking.

Good answer, there are also things like spray bottles which automatically spray the cat when it reaches the door.

I think it would be best to just keep your cat inside if it has already been in the house for 5 years I have a have a 1yr 3month old cat my husband bought at a pet store so I am guessing she had never been outside. One night she must have got out. I finally realized she was missing about 11 the next day i found her after an hour of looking for her she was dehydrated and really dirty . she learned her lesson for going out and I am more cautious leaving the door open.

My cats have been out most of their lives and one has had feline aids. It got into a fight with another cat with FIV. If you watch your cats when they go out and keep them from stray cats then they will have a chance of staying safe. Or tie a string to their collars (if they have them) and take them for walks outside. they may not like it but it is a very safe way to let your cats outside.

Instead of tying a string, you should get a cat harness, or you can push your cat around in a special cat stroller.

OR.... you could build or buy an outdoor cat enclosure.

I used to take my cat on a leash when she was little but as she got older she really didn't care to go outside anymore. now she's content to be inside.
