Some cats just do NOT like to be petted. And some cats do not like to be held or picked up. I have a few cats out of my pride that I’m not allowed to hold or pick up. They were raised just the same as the others that do like to be held and picked up but they just don’t like it. It’s a purr-sonality trait that I don’t feel you can change.

One of my cats is like that too.but she will let me pet her and pick her up but not all the time almost like she wants to be petted and held half the time but not the other half. Its probally just the personality of the cat like some cats love attention and some cats don’t.Don’t give up though because you don’t want to ignore her. Good luck!

I have 3 cats. They’re all very different, personality-wise. One wants to be around you all the time. Another one loves to be pet by my boyfriend but not by me, and the last one will only let me pet him but only when he feels like it. Don’t take it personal. Cats, like people, have different personalities. One advice I will give you is “don’t force her. let her come to you”.

SOME CATS JUST LIKE TO DO THEIR OWN THING. THEY STILL LOVE YOU BUT THEY DONT LIKE TO BE HUNG ON. I HAD A CAT FOR 6 YEARS AND MY FRIENDS NEVER KNEW I HAD A CAT UNTIL THEY SAW THE LITTER BOX. THATS JUST THEIR PERSONALITY.

my little girl Spooky was much the same, she didnt like to be picked up, but in her own way loved me and was very faithful. She always slepted at the foot of my bed. I could just start down the hall to my room and she would get up even if she was napping on the floor. Just accept for who she is, I pretty certain she loves you.

That is one of the characteristics of a feral cat. Just taking it in doesn’t change it. If it is not feral, it might be that you are trying at the wrong times. For most cats, meals are almost like ceremonies with special rules. Trying to pet the back of a cat on its way to eat, it might shrink closer to the ground away from your hand, or might consider your hand as an obstacle to go around. And don’t try while your cat is actually eating (the second most important activity in their lives).. Even other cats observe these rules. Two of my feral kittens were wrestling. One was getting the better of the other. So the smaller/weaker one stopped and started to head for the food bowl. The attacker observed the tules letting the other go to eat. The funny thing is that the one going to eat was lying, it knew the attacker would stop. As soon as the attacker turned away, the liar pounced on him, getting the upper hand.
There is a question on the site about befriending ferals. Even if your cat is not feral, the answers might help you.
