Scardy cat

3 Answers  |  Asked By: godisstevejobs   3

We adopted a 2 yro cat about 5 months ago. She started off pretty scared and just spent most of the time in the bathroom with her bed food and liter. We also have another cat, but they get along, we had them separated at first though. Well now she still hasn’t really changed, only now it’s our bed. She will eat her food in the living room and go to the liter box down stairs, but if you see her doing this she will freeze, and the next move you make shes off to the bed. When she’s on the bed she’s ok, she sleeps with us, let us pet her anything, but off the bed she freaks out and I don’t know what to do. I have tried just about everything I can find on the internet. Do I wait and pet her or wait and ignore her? Treats or love? Dear God I got nothing. I tried to pet her in the living room the other night and she bit me, but 10 sec later on the bed she didn’t even know she did it. What do I do?

It’s possible your cat feels secure on the bed.If so,try petting her on the bed, then gently pick her up and take her to another room.If she freaks out set her down and let her re-group,then try again.Hopefully after a while she will get used to you taking her to another room and let you do this.Probably once she has gotten used to you taking her to another room, she will let you pet her in any other room.

when i adopted a 2 year old cat, she had been abused and neglected in her previous home. they told me at the shelter that it would take quite a few months for her to feel secure and comfy with us. she hid under the bed for the first 2 months!
what worked for me was to let her settle in at her own pace and not force her. try to go about your daily activities in a routine way, like watch tv in the living room at a certain time every night. my cat started coming downstairs to see what we were doing on her own. when we saw her we would just greet her in a quiet and welcoming voice and not try to grab her or pet her. the idea is to let her know that you are a “safe” person and the house is a safe place. keep your energy very calm and focus on anything but her.
it is a very slow process, but the first time she comes to you and lays next to you on the couch you will feel so rewarded. we have had penelope for a little over a year now, and she still suprises us every week with a new level of intimacy she’s achieved.
