Why do cats kill their young?

8 Answers  |  Asked By: cutiekitties   563

My best friends cat had a litter of four healthy kittens. She appeared to be doing great with them, until one day she killed three of them! Nothing else could have killed them, and she tried to kill her fourth kitten. Is that normal for her to do that?

It’s nature… sometimes it just happens.

There isn’t a clear cut reason for why this happens either. The cat could just be a bad a mother or maybe something is wrong with the kittens that only she can sense.

Please tell your friend to spay her cat asap.

Maybe the mom thought that the kittens were ill and didn’t want them to suffer. I am very sorry!

It’s very sad, though. And kind of creepy. Sorry about your kitties.

the mother cat probably felt threatened or just felt that there might’ve been something wrong w/ them, a disorder or something. i saw this movie and it showed a horse giving birth and the baby horse had trouble standing up and walking and could for about 4 hrs and a baby horse is supposed to start walking after it came out. but the leader knew there was something wrong w/ the baby and his legs. he had instincts and followed them, so [viewer discretion] the leader killed the baby because he knew the baby was suffering from whatever he had. maybe a nerve or walking problem. that’s nature if people couldn’t handle it. i’m sorry that the mother killed them and i don’t know a solution. maybe a vet would know. much sympathy. ♥

a mother cat’s kittens aren’t her prey. their first instinct is to protect them for whatever reason. but i do agree w/ kathykat because the mother was probably busy taking care of the kittens as much as possible and didn’t realize she sat on them. by the way, did the mother cat just go up to her kittens and started killing them immediately after she gave birth?

That happened to me too.so I researched it .They will sometimes kill their first litter. Also they kill them if they have a disease. They will also kill them sometimes if their under stress. They kill them sometimes if you touch them to early and don’t want them or think their in danger.
