Is your cat neutered? If he isn’t, this is the first thing you must do.
You have to determine where the aggression is coming from. There are 5 types:
Aggression due to fear
Pain or illness induced aggression
Aggression due to over stimulation (petting)
Play aggression
Redirected aggression
Whenever you see a sudden change in your cat’s behavior you need to determine what caused this change. Cats that are sick or in pain will often react with biting humans and other animals. Make sure the first thing you do is have a vet check out your cat. There are medications your vet can prescribe to help during the re-training process. Prozac or St. John’s Wort work best. Do not use Valium as it may make him more aggressive. It will also drug him more and make him unsteady.
A cat that is frightened will have a fear response. He is only protecting himself and should not be punished. Remove the cat from the situation that is causing his fear. Give him some time to calm down.
If your cat attacks while you’re petting him, freeze. Don’t fight back. Don’t hit the cat. Don’t spray him with a spray bottle. If your cat has a hold on you, slapping your other hand on a hard surface may startle him enough to break the hold on you. If you remain still, usually they will release.
Get a clock or a stopwatch to time how long your cat will allow being petted before he reacts. Watch you cats body language. Cats will give off warning signs that they have had enough. Usually it’s the tail twitching.
Say you determine that 2 minutes is his limit. With your watch handy, start petting your cat. Pet him for 1 ½ minutes and then stop. Even if he’s calm and purring, stop. Do this for several days. Always watch for signs that he’s becoming over stimulated.
After several days of following this time limit, increase the time.
Play aggression: Don’t use your hands or feet as toys. Use fishing pole toys or a toy on a string.
Once the cat attacks, stand perfectly still. Say “no” sharply. Don’t try to pull away the hand he’s biting. He will only bite harder to keep his “prey” from escaping. Once you’ve released your hand or foot from him, place him in another room for 5 minutes or so. Don’t hit him and don’t yell at him.
You will learn to recognize when your cat is about to attack. You should always retreat before the attack happens. Have toys like furry little mice in your pocket. If you see your cat about to attack you, toss out a toy to get him focused on something other than you. If he attacks from behind, stand still and let out a scream.

When my cat is overstimulated or in a playful mood, but I am too busy to pay attention, he will lie on his back. That is a definite time to not pet him because he will go after my hand tooth-and-nail. But if he is sitting down or lying on his stomach, he loves the petting (especially the forehead rub) and never bites or scratches.

you should play with your cat and do what he likes, give him toys and things, abd make sure you don’t give him anything when he bites. also it would be a good idea to go take him to the vet and check he is not sick in any way. hope it helps so you and your cat can be happyer and you in less pain. bye!
