The whole cat vs. dog thing goes waaaaaaaaay back. Dogs, being predators, have insticts to chase. Domestic cats unfortunately come in small, extra chase-able packagdes.

Not all cats hate dogs and not all dogs hate cats. In the cases where dogs hate cats though, I think it is because they think cats are fun to chase.

If they weren’t introduced to dogs as a kitten, then they might have trouble adjusting to a dog joining the family or coming into a family with a canine. It’s not that cats hate dogs, you just need to think of the personalities. A cat is a calm animal, sleeping, grooming, playing/hunting. Where as a dog being energetic, enthusiastic, very loud, a giant compared to Kitty, and a mouth full of slober and teeth. You might see why a cat won’t befriend a dog over night.

Lots of times you might see a picture of a kitten and puppy together, when they are so little they take eachother in as friends. And grow up to continue befriending the other species. But adult vs kid might not go over as well. An adult cat not being used to a dog/puppy or a Dog not being used to a kitten, you have to be carefully in those situations as everyone is scared.

Some adult cats with time will get used to a dog in the home, be sure to provide the cat with it’s own space, where it can safely hang out/sleep do whatever in a place that the dog isn’t allowed or cannot reach. There’s not much your cat can do to a dog, usually they swat just to get the dog to leave it alone, not to go in for a kill. So wounds. if any, will be minor and shallow.

If you haven’t had a cat before and have any kind of hunting dog or dog with a history of chasing cats, be sure to keep an eye on the dog for awhile, to see how he gets along with the cat. As there have been cases of dogs killing cats, just like they would a rodent or bird.

I hope this helps, Tasia.

I have two dogs and one cat, and they all get along very well, but the cat (Earl Gray), was introduced to them as a kitten, and the dogs have always lived with a cat, so it’s not a big deal to them. It all depends on the individual animals. I still have to watch them when they play together though because my lab mix doesn’t know how big her paws are. For the most part, they all just “hang out” together.
