Because that’s the cat’s most sensitive spot on his body, so its his instincts to hide it most of the time. It also depends on what kind of cat you have, but when your cat rolls over on it’s back in front of you, that means that he knows that you won’t hurt him.

They aren't the opposite of dogs at all, actually. It's also the most sensitive spot on a dog, which is the whole point of why a submissive dog will expose his belly to higher-ranking individuals, either people or other dogs. It's part of the pack behavior and hierarchy-sorting behavior that dogs/wolves have. Cats do not have this mentality though so they do not naturally roll over and expose their belly unless they trust you not to hurt them.

Has your cat ever been okay with you rubbing her belly? If not, all of these other answers probably will suffice.
However, if she used to let you and it has changed, that may indicate that something is wrong. My cat always loved to have her belly rubbed, then suddenly became very protective of it. I didn’t think anything of it until she stopped eating. Turned out that she had eaten some non-edible objects and that they had caused her stomach to stretch to three times its size and twist around the other organs to fit. The stomach was distended and hard because of this (like a tumor). Thankfully surgery righted everything, but it was a little while before she started liking to have her belly rubbed. ![]()

It varies from cat to cat…the cat, if it trusts you, often rolls over to expose its belly. This does not always mean that they want a belly rub. Most of the time, they are expressing their trust in you by exposing the most vulnerable, fleshy part of their body.

When I first got my cat, I grabbed a book at Petsmart just to learn a little more about his odd behaviors and it said that the tummy is the most sensitive spot on a cat, but them letting you rub it is supposed to be the biggest sign of trust between the cat and you. That made me feel loved when he finally started letting me rub his tummy.
maybe some cats are just like people and have problems being touched certain places… like my finacee hates anyone touching his feet?!
