Pig is a fantastic cat and a joy to have. He is very friendly and loving. He trusts me emphatically and has to be near me at all times when I am home. However, nobody ever gets to see the wonderful cat I have because he will not let anybody else get anywhere near him. Whenever someone comes to my house he will just sit on the counter watching them with an evil eye and even swipe/hiss at them when they come close. The same goes when we travel to my parents house.
Everybody calls him the evil cat, but I know differentley. He is the best cat I have ever had. He gets along great with his brother but when Tail gets to close to me on the bed he will do his little spoiled routine.
I am pretty sure this is my fault because for the first 18 months of his life it was just me and him. Now, he is having to adjust to other people in my house. He is a mama’s boy through and through. I just wonder if anybody has any suggestions to help him cope with this.
I have tried socialization and everything. He just does not want to be touched or loved by anybody but me and his brother, Tail!

You are right. You are likely the “cause” of Pigs possessiveness. LOL! I also accidently caused a cat to be possessive of me, she was rescued at 8 weeks with a broken leg and I babied her waaaaaaayyyyyy to much. She had the same behavior you describe with Pig. And everyone thought she was evil, when in reality she is the sweetest little angel ever.
If possible try making social time more fun. Right before company comes over create a distraction with a feather wand and/or treats and keep Pig playing with you while company is filing in. After many, many times of doing this, see if it doesn’t modify his behavior. Eventually, if Pig stays out for everyone to see, try handing the wand off to other people and see if that doesn’t get Pig to open up to others. It will take some time to break his hidey, evil, swiping behavior but it can be done with persistence.
Also, remind company never to look Pig in the eye. I know it sounds silly, but looking a cat in the eye is a direct threat and if company is doing that to Pig he feels he needs to retaliate and protect his fur-mom,brother and his territory. So no eye contact. Ignoring or redirection to a wand is the best way for company to interact with Pig during this time. Someday Pig may allow touching, but probably not anytime soon so work that one out in Pig time. :o)
Just remember that it often takes 3 times the amount of time to undo a behavior than it took to create that behavior. It took a year to undo most of what I had done while babying my broken legged cat into psycho diva-dom. And there are still certain people she will not accept, but she’s better than she was when she was little. Good luck!

My cats are tamed ferals so this is normal for them not to be social. I usually don’t try to make my cats social. I let them hide. When they feel that I’m relaxed around the people, they will come out. Playing works the best with them rather than letting the people try to touch them. Just take your time, you will get Pig more social. Is Pig a tamed feral? If so it will take a lot of time and those people will have to come to your home often. Also, you will have to let Pig know that hissing and swipping is not accecptable behaviour for him with any person. Also, since I have tamed many a feral as Kat say tell people to not look them right in the eye. Big No No when taming ferals.

No, he is not a feral cat. He came from a reputable Manx breeder. The problem being is that in the first few months of his life I was devoted to him and work. Meaning my social life was zip! I don't have any family in the area, so it is safe to say that he rarley had to interact with outside persons. In short, Pig and I lived in our own little world. I recentley rescued his brother Tail. He did fantastic with him and accepted him right away (except for when Tail tries to take his spot on the bed :)). Now that work has settled I have time for company. He does not "hide" persay. He just sits on the counter (I call it his throne) and guards his territory.

I want to tell you one more thing about my cat. Not your cat mine. When they decied to hiss and swat they get a good spray from the spray bottle. I will not tolerate that behavior.

That is good. It sounds as if you have a great handle on the discipline thing. I am sure it takes a firm hand to tame a feral. I always admired people who had the patience to do that.

Pig tail, your question blew my mind, my cat Igby ( pig) is the same as your pig in every way. I fostered, then adopted, him as a feral when he was 4 weeks old. He fell in love with my boyfriends cat Kafka (k), and they\’ve been close \”brothers\” ever since. k\’s incredibly outgoing and friendly to guests, pig sits on the counter, yelling loudly and flashing the stink eye at guests. His stand off behavior led me to believe that my babying him was the cause of his devotion to me, my boyfriend and i have shared a bed since i got him but Pig is only 50% comfortable with him.
The cat i know and the cat people see are entirely different. considering our stories are sooo alike, I\’d definitely agree that your pig has feral genes, unless you can actually track the breeders history, Also, when my pig was a kitten, you\’d never be able to tell he was feral, now that he\’s two and displaying this behavior it all makes perfect sense.
i have one question for you, does your pig ever put toys in his water bowl?

It’s your cat cause when you got it as a kitten, it thought id outa be her mother, and the cat thinks \other people are pests, or ruining their terrirortory.
