We crated our two fighting males in the same room for about a week. Each cat was allowed out of the crate in that room- one in the morning and one in the afternoon alternating every day. Eventually they were allowed out in the room together under supervision. If they started to go at each other, the one who started it would be put back in the crate. Once they could get along in that room, they were allowed outside of the room. Same thing if they went at it outside of the room. It can be a long process with some cats. Patience….but it paid off. They now live in harmony.
My mother moved in with us a year ago with an adult male cat that had never been around other cats. He was a stray Tom that she took in and neutered. He would slam himself into her slider when he saw a cat outside, growling and hissing. We kept him in her bedroom for a month. Then he was allowed out under supervision. If he started to go at one of our cats, we gently picked him up - no yelling-no punishment-and back to her room he went. As time went on we would use a spray bottle but not in the beginning. He was getting used to dogs and cats and a new home. He never knew where it was coming from but he realized that if he attacked a cat or dog, he got wet. It took several months but he lives in harmony with our other cats.
