You don’t. You just have to let things play out and hope that they make friends.
We have a houseful of cats and while most of the time they all get along, there are always rivalries. All multi cat households have a pecking order, and when someone steps out of place that’s when fights happen.
On the rare occasion that one of the cats starts bullying the others, that cat is removed from the pride and left to sleep off its anger in the spare room alone, just as you would send a child to their room as punishment.
A lot of people swear by expensive Feliway spray and diffusers, but I have never seen any difference take place while using them. In fact I have actually seen them CAUSE a cat to get upset and spray the diffuser, which is what they are supposed to prevent. At $40.00 a diffuser that was a very frustrating moment for me. Others swear by Bachs Rescue Remedy, a product made from flower essences that is supposed to control stress, but I also have had no success with that either.
It’s really just about letting your cats work it out. Of course its NOT ok just to allow them to fight constantly, but it’s them that have to settle it. Not you.

I totally agree with Kat. And we had one cat actually spray the Feliway diffuser. We have had good luck with the Feliway spray, though. We also use a spray bottle with cold water if a fight breaks out. It has worked wonders with a new cat we have who keeps slapping the others as they walk by her. If she goes at them again, off to kitty jail.

We had two cats that suddenly decided they hated each other. They were 4 and 3 when this happened. Smokey was a year old when we got Kodiak who was 4 months old and they had been fine. Smokey is a tame cat and Kodiak is a feral. One of them could not walk into a room without the other jumping on him. These were not little squabbles and we were worried that they were going to do damage to each other. Everyone I asked said to get rid of one of them. We’re not ones to give up easily and will go to the ends of the earth to solve a problem with our animals. So we set them up in dog crates (our kitty jail) in our bird room. They spent a couple days in the crate without getting out at all. We would visit them but they couldn’t get out. Then every day I would let one out for half the day and the other for the rest of the day. This went on for several weeks. Eventually I started letting them out together (in the den) under SUPERVISION. I stayed close by with a spray bottle and put their favorite treats spread out on the floor. (No catnip because some cats get aggressive after eating catnip). It took a couple more weeks. We then did trial runs out of the den during the day but back into the crates at night for several more weeks. Smokey and Kodiak now live in harmony and have not had to go back to kitty jail for a couple of years.

I had the same problem. Try separating your cats. I’m guessing you had just one cat and introduced the other afterwards. If that is the case, separate the newcomer in another room and have them interact for small periods of supervised time. The older cat may feel threatened by the presence of another cat in his/her territory. That could explain the hostility towards the newcomer. The process will take time but eventually they will be able to share the space. This will not guarantee they will be buddies, but at least the fighting will end. Hope this helps!

I want to explain - Kitty Jail is a dog crate we have set up in our home for when a cat needs some time out or we have a new addition. I didn’t want anyone to think that kitty jail was a shelter or the pound.

Put both of the cats in a room with all the doors and windows closed so they don’t get out! they will smell each other and they will eventually become friends!

You should NEVER lock two cats together unsupervised and without a way out, especially if one of them is aggressive towards the other. That's just not responsible.

I'm sorry but this is a very bad idea. Do NOT lock two fighing cats in a room together in hopes that they will make up. No. No. No.

OMG! This is a horrible answer and if someone tries this with two cats that hate each other, they could very well end up with 2 ripped up cats! Cat fights are not pleasant! Please DO NOT ever lock 2 cats in a room together that are fighting.
