How do I tell if my cats are fighting or playing?

10 Answers  |  Asked By: kathfish89   26

I got a new kitten to keep my older kitten company. When they get too close inside the house they growl at each other and occasionally hiss. When they’re outside they don’t make any noise, they stalk and chase each other and feign swipes. Before we got the new kitten my old kitten used to do this with me when she was playing. So, are they playing or fighting?

Growling and hissing are warnings or threats - not play. But stalk and chase and even swipes are playing. Although if one is a lot bigger or faster or smarter, the other could receive a minor injury (unintentional). Indoors, a real fight could develop if one of them pushes it, but neither of them wants to risk injury.

So true! Except swipes can be playing--or real, too. Stalks can be, too.

If you cat hisses or growls than they are not playing but if they swipe or pounce and run away and then swipe again then they are playing. They may fight if the other takes their toy or something. Then they might fight but otherwise they will mostly play.

Oh so if they\\\’re swiping minor problem can occur but stalking one another now thats some big problem. I suggest you take them to a vet or buy another kitten and another cat to play with eachother. Now listen here, if this doesn\\\’t stop I suggest you keep them in seprate rooms for several hours. Heres the trick: since they won\\\’t see eachother that will prevent them from fighting. Make sure that they won\\\’t beable to get out without you. Put up a gate or something. If none of this works I think you should give up one of the cats.

Stalk and pounce and feint attack are some of my cats favorite games with each other. And valuable lessons. It takes a lot of skill to sneak up on another cat. And for the cats, it takes a lot of skill to notice another skillful cat sneaking up on them. Mine just like to sneak up and pounce to the side or in front of another cat, and they take great pride in being able to do so without being detected. Even though all of them are over a year old.
